A trial balloon in London urges that the United States raise the price of gold and then use its paper profits from that to set up a fund to stabilize the British pound and other European curren- Ss. And a U. S. senator quickly warned that “Hell will pop” in Congress if any such proposal comes out of the Eisenhower Churchill talks. He hastens to add: There is no indication yet that such a proposal will be made to SS. American bankers regard a re- turn to stable currencies and to their free convertibility as a prime goal for the free world. But many U. S. Bankers doubt if a U. S. Treasurysupported fund to accomplish this is the best way. And even more bankers object to any scheme to so use a paper profit from raising the dollar price of gold at Ft. Knox. The National City Bank of New York, in its January letter, calls such a scheme “currency infla- tion” and “about the poorest way to deal with a ‘dollar shortage’.” And the letter gives this advice: “The best way to make currencies convertible is to make them con- vertible.” In its simplest terms, converti bility means the ability to ex change the currency of one nation NOTES Payable forms. 10 for 15c.| 191 H.P. This is done through money chang- ers, foreign exchange dealers and banks—and at rates agreed upon by the parties involved. Simple convertibility went out early in the Thirties for many na- tions. Now you can change dollars into pounds, or pounds into dollars only when and if the British govern- ment permits, and in the amounts and for the purposes it orders. Britain contends it hasn't enough gold and dollars in reserve to set free its pound. Attempts since the war to re- establish free convertibility have been mostly futile so far. Inconvertibility of currencies, as widely practiced now, has deprived people of opportunities to travel, buy other nations’ goods, sell their own, or to invest overseas with any hope of getting their money back. The International Monetary Fund was established at Bretton Woods to carry on money-changing be- tween governments to effect stable rates of exchange. But the National City Bank points out that in administering their gold monopolies and regulating private foreign exchange business, the member nations have put sta- bility of nominal exchange values ahead of convertibility. The bank notes: “Few things are lest useful to | rates at which currencies cannot be exchanged.” TRIAL SET FOR SOLDIER FT. MEADE, Md. ®@ — Second | Army headquarters has set Jan. 15 as trial day for Pfe. Warren sentence of 10 years at hard labor for the 2i-yearcld soldier from Alloway, N. J. The court also ordered a dis |honorable discharge and forfeiture lof all pay allowances during the time in prison. -| The conviction was set aside by ithe Court of Military Appeals in Washington, | Reprieve For Just In Time Doomed Killer HUNTSVILLE, Tex. — Elated = Robert Ernest Miers, his prayers for life answered by his eleventh- hour stay of execution, changed hurriedly from his burial suit Wed. and prepared to eat the “last meal” he had refused earlier, Miers, 22, saved by a three-day ~ stay issued about 25 minutes be- fore he was to walk to the electrie chair, said, “I'm sure going to sleep good tonight. I certainly got back my appetite.” He had refused food for two days. He had been scheduled to die just after midnight for the March 8, 1951, slaying of A. J. Sendemer, Bexar County road employe who had sought to stop a service station holdup in which Miers took part. The State Board of Pardons and Parples granted the 72-hour stay late Tuesday after Miers’ lawyer telephoned board members he had found a hitherto. unknown eyewit- ness to the slaying. Hurried tele- phone conferences by the. three members of the board resulted in the action. At San Antonio, where members of the Calvary Missionary Church had prayed for more than 2,000 consecutive hours that the youth's life might be spared, the Rev. Frank Stribling, pastor, said: “We believe God will show him- ie 1 ¥ self greater than the affairs of . “| men.” Miers had appeared stunned when told Tuesday that the par- don board had rejected his appeal for.a commutation of his sentence to life imprisonment. “Pardon me a minute,” he had said, “I have to sit down. You know, I thought I had at least a 50-50 chance with that board.” When Editor Don Reid of the Huntsville Item appeared at the State Prison soon after receiving news.of Miers’ execution stay, the youth was changing from the suit he was to be electrocuted — and buried — in. He shook hands with Reid vigorously. “What did you do when you heard the good news?” Reid asked. Still trembling and his head freshly shaved for the electrocu- tion, Miers answered, “I jumped up and kissed Father Francis Duffy!” Duffy is a Catholic prison chap- lain. Protestant Chaplain B. C. Anderson brought the news of the prayers,” Miers said. “I'm tho happiest man in the world.” There was no word from Linda Clark, 23, serving five years for her part ‘in the slaying for which Miers was convicted. She is at nearby Goree Prison Farm for Women, She and Miers have corresponded continuously in the year they have been im) ki She has said she would like to marry Miers “if everything turned. out all right.” FBI Will Probe Homestead Case MIAMI W—Inv of the Robert W.
