He and his wife had eee the other day in which a visitor {chatted with him several times, to the city ran into a chain of |but they had never even gotten to circumstances which might have | left him with a slightly bad taste | in his mouth but, instead, con | vinced him that Key Westers are of a special breed when it comes | to helping their fellow men out of a jam. The story concerns a_honey- mooning couple from Portland, Maine, who came to Florida and Key West for a few weeks and ended up in the clutches of the | law through no fault of their own and how they found a friend when they least expected to. The newlyweds, after several days of leisure here, checked out of a local motel and drove up the keys with Miami Beach as their destination. - They got as far as Marathon when they were ordered to pull over to the side of the road by a Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputy who told them thet he had a war- rant for their arrest. The charge, “wilful destruction of private pro- | perty,” was brought by the owner of the motel where the couple had been staying. The motel keeper claimed that they had broken an ash tray and burned a bidspread. He demanded that they pay for the damage or go to jail. The frightened couple was re- turned to’ Key West where they were booked at the county jail. Their bond was set at $100. Things looked dark indeed for the honeymooners because, sadly, they: did not have $100 with them. With a cell staring them in the face, the distraught couple did not know which way to turn. And then the husband happened to’ remember that they had eaten on several occasions in a Duval Street restaurant where he had be come somewhat friendly with the the point where they exchanged names. However, the tourist decided to try a shot in the dark, called the | restaurateur and told him what had happened. “TI hardly thought that he would post the bond -for my wife and me, after all were were complete strangers,” the Portland man said later. But the upshot of the situation was that the restaurant man went over to the jail and peeled off five twenties and the pair went free. The charges were dismissed the next day after investigation. “I was really amazed,” said the tourist, ‘that this man trusted me. We might have been the type of people who would have left town that night and he would have been out $100.” The man, who we think should get the Man of the Year Award, is Vincent Caselles, manager of Ramonin’s Restaurant on Duval Street. Attorney Bill Neblett, who is the 1953 fund raising chairman for the March of Dimes Campaign, fell victim to his own efficiency last Sunday when he was playing cards at the home of a frined. Neblett had just dealt the paste boards in a game which he des- ecribed as “penny ante rummy” when the house’ was invaded by an entry in the March of Dimes Queen contest who had as her in- tention the collection of donations for the polio fund. Under the queen contest plan, the winner is chosen on the basis of the amount of money she can collect for the infantile paralysis drive. This particular damsel enriched her treasury by about ‘four bucks, Neblett reported. _..MARATHON NEWS.
