SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON Wise Men Seek Jesus, Matthew 431-12 BY RALPH ROGERS The story of the Wise Men is peculiar to Matthew, He states that the Wise Men from the east came to Jertigalem seeking “the that is born King of the Jews.” Having just celebrated Christmas we are still impressed with the fact that men from @istant lands should know about the Christ child and that they, being. scientists, should travel so far with perfect abandon, to worship the new born King. This declared purpose of the men from the east is*evidence that the issue with them was not an astronomi- cal fact but lofty business of the soul. Christ does not need these incidents to enthrone him but rather he enthrones the story it- self. The Magi seemed to be fami- liar with and sympathetic to the Jewish expectations about the Messiah. Synagogues existed all through the east and had consi- derable influence. Nearly all the women at Damascus were pro- selytes and the story had sifted through during the Babylonian exile. Esther and Mordecai may ha eported it at the court of Ahasuerus or the Magi may have heard about it through the pro- phecy of Balaam, their fellow marl nrape ‘There shall come jar out of Jacob and P= te shall rise out of Israel. (Num. 24:17) Being philosophers as well as astrologers, it was their business to verify these facts and to do so necessitated the journey to Jerusalem. No doubt these wise men were as- tonished to learn that no one in Jerusalem seemed to know any thing about the ‘new born King.” Of course Herod was troubled. He had plenty to trouble him. royal power was about to pass away from him and his line. He put the authors of it to death and his slaughter of the innocents is evidence that Herod would stop at nothing to protect his heinous and nefarious acts, Macrobius, a hea then historian writing about 400 A. D. says that when news was brought to Augustus that Herod had ordered all children under two years of age slain including his own son, the emperor remarked, that it was better to be Herod’s pig than Herod's son It was probably enquire or insinuaty a new king was about to be n. These men from the east h sked the question and the a of the strangers perhaps stunned the King for a spell. He began to devise some means of discovering who the new King would be. He called in his own intellectuals and had them make diligent search for any such prophecy. When the ev’ idence | was forthcoming Herod called the Magi in and instructed them to proceed to Bethlehem and t the exact place where should be born. In this innocent strangers ful as spies in \ {reason in the realm. dangerous to The Magi apparéntly lost the star for a while in Jerusalem, but as they proceeded on their journey, behold the star went be- fore them and camo and stood over where the young child was. “And they came into the house and saw the young child,” and they fell down and worshipped him. This was the customary method of doing homage to a monarch and the Magi recoaniz- ed in this babe the Messiah, destined to establish the kingdom of God on earth. John Ruskin in one of his letters writes of this event, “These men, for their own part, ie - | beg you very earnestly again to note this - not to see, nor talk - but to do re- verence. They are neither cur- ious nor talkative, but submis- sive.” Legend has adorned the well- loved story of the three kings of Orient. It is said that Casper re- presented a gift of substance -gold. Even today livelihood usurps the place of life unless life is dedicat- ed to God. Trade, finance, mater- ials, have all become of such commanding interest that it is be- coming a fratricide unless it first becomes a worship. Melchior brought frankincense, which be- cause of its fragrance, can repre- sent our inner treasure of thought and influence. Mr. Rogers says of his morning appreciate the perfect view large- appreciate its beauty. Glancing in- to the future we may be inclined to take a pessimistic view simply begause we cannot see clearly. Jesus gives us a hyperbole of the log and the splinter. The interpre- ter should not miss the broad humor; beam is the log beam of a house, and mote is a speck or a splinter. The hyperbole underscores proverb made new by Jesus. In the sour mind a man enjoys cor- recting his neighbor which gives pensate for the failure within him- our own eyes, that we can appre- ciate the beauty and goodness of others.
