SOCIETY — PERSONALS — NEWS OF INTEREST TO WOMEN DOROTHY RAYMER, Society Editor Page 4 THE KEY WEST CITIZEN Friday, December 19, 1952 SHOP HOPPING _ A | JAXON Only four more shopping days *til Christmas. . .doesn’t it have a scary sound? Ohmigosh, it’s almost here, and although my cards are mailed, all the gifts wrapped, the tree in the yard, the decorations all out, I somehow never felt less ready. A quick trip to Miami early Sun- day morning to bring the rest of the family down, Mom and Dad. Maybe that will do it. Hope every- one can spend Christmas with Mom and Dad, because it takes parents and children to really make Christmas. x *k * Baldwin’s Nursery out back looks more like Santa Claus Lane than anything else, That’s be- cause the red and white poin- settias bloom there in such pro+. fusion. If you are doing any out of door Christmas decor 9 year, why not do it for this year and the next, and the next, by ing those flaming bushes? you know that the poin- settia flower is ally yellow? The flaming leaves you see are just leaves, and the actual blos- som is that little bitty yellow thing in the center. Inside the nursery store all is gay too, with bells and ribbons and a tiny Christmas tree. Also, and | got quite tickled about this, they have a big ball or gourd from a calabash tree. 1 could just picture old Van Winkle’s elves rolling one of these along their rocky mountainous bowling alleys as old Rip slept om for twenty years. Keowee k The Crisco people have a new recipe for a cookie mix I tried that is really a dilly, because from the basie mix you can make so many different kinds of cookies. Til just give you the recipe for the mix and you can go on from there yourself. All you do is mix six cups of sifted all purpose flour, one tablespoon of salt and one pound of Crisco together, waiting for all the other ingredients to make date bars. sugar cookies, molasses cookies, brownies and nut balls. All you have to do from there is stir in one half cup light brown, dark brown or white sugar, one fourth tsp. baking powder, one egg and one tablespoon of milk. Then you add your nuts, dates, molasses, chocolate, spices or whatever, and you're off! x * Someone who looks just like me was heard to remark in the Children’s Cornner yesterday, “It's times like these when I wish Gail were tiny in.” OF course | was looking at the tot sized dress when | made the re- mark. They are the cutest little bits of things ever. Gay bright colors, fluffy fluffy, ruffles, smart styles, and all in wee sizes. For Christmas, for spring, for all year ‘round. In the toy department, | was playing a new style piano. Most- ly for my own amazement of course. But if your tot can read numbers from one to eight, he or she can play it. It sits flat. like a big book with an eight tone keyboard, and the numbered. Open the cover and there are the notes all marked out in numbers to be followed. 1 felt like a virtuoso playing “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star’ on sight. It’s more fun for the kids to play when they can make re- cognizable tunes all by them- selves. ee Rew It’s good to see people being good neighbors, and never did any- one have better neighbors than Mrs. Hannah Baer the other night when her sister-in-law Ethel was suddenly taken very ill in the store The entire staff at Donald's, bless ’em, came on over to the Heal Togs and took over, So now every night after a day of struggling with bleach, dye and curls, *hey all go on over and sell baby clothes. It's quite a sight to see Louis handling a pair of rubber panties instead of donning rubber gloves, Sue peering over the baby shoe boxes, Donald up to his ears in diapers (he says it isn’t strange at all), e coy among the dolls in the toy department, Flora right at home among’ the booties and Ruthie busy wrapping y pack ages. Like I it’s sure n to have good neighbors, but it gives an extra special glow at Christ mas time 9 Pid oe ha Extra guests coming? Well amd why not? It's‘nicest to have a house full right at Christmas time. Hy Altman thinks se too | because he has @ big new ship- ment of very beautiful studio couches. They have big springy mattresses and will put out te make twin beds. Closed up they are the prettiest couches imagin- | able with big square cushions at the back. Almost any house can be arranged to accomodate a studio couch somewhere, and mine was no exception. The love- ly fabric designs will blend in with any color scheme you have and you should see the wonderful effect the bits of gold shot through the designs makes. Like I said, it’s no mean trick to make room for two more when the house is full up, com- fortably that is, but with a new studio couch like the ones at Altman‘s Furniture Store, pres- tol It’s done! Kok ok I know Donald hates to see his name in print, but we sat at Wylk’s at coffee yesterday ex- changing recipes and he gave me He tells me that Ann pops smoking hot donuts on the table, fresh fried for breakfast, in nothing flat. All she does is have a pan of fat, sizzling hot on the stove, and opens a ean of Ballard biscuits. Instead of wasting good dough on the holes, she just pokes a hole in and works the biscuit around. Then pops them in the grease and fries until brown, and then into the bag of sugar and cinnamon, and out hot on the plate for the hungry family. * * Of course you know the Casa Marina is going to open on a grand scale tomorrow night, Dec ember 20th, but did you know that the Dress Shop under the expert handling of Miss Abbe is already open? It’s charming, and the clothes are wonderful. You are invited to come in and look around, wk & As more and more books appear on the literary horizon, it is wise to stop and wonder how much either of happiness or knowledge is advanced by the multitude of authors. Dr. Samuel Johnson said that “He that teaches us anything which we knew not before, is un- doubtedly to be reverenced as a master. He that conveys knowledge by more pleasing ways may very properly be loved as a benefac- tor; and he that supplies life with innocent amusement will be cer- tainly caressed as a pleasing com- panion.”” Most of us who try to add our little one two, to the world of books have hopes of being in either of the three categories. This is mostly the result of three ways too. . . .unconsciously repeating in orderly fashion the disordered facts gleaned from much reading, the results of much living, and the ability to build one word atop the other in a gleaming castle of phan- tasy. It’s times like these that make me afraid to go back and read what I have written. 5 ea Paid When the Christmas Shopping’s all done and the noise and shout- ing has ceased, how nice to settle down beside the tree in robe and slippers. Mrs. Baer at Ideal Togs show- ed me a small sized robe yester- day that was just exactly right for our babes in this clime. It was a Terry Cloth robe by Can- non and Fashioned Styled by Miami, in light blue, white or yellow. A cuter wee garinent hasn‘t been designed for lqung- ing than this one. Of medium length it features cute elbow length sleeves with unusual cuff treatment, large shaw collar, and tied belt. The whole thing trim- med with inch long white fringe. Heartily recommended by me as a gift for the favorite small one, or just to be worn, starting Christmas morning. Another nice new note, @ mav- tical print cotten pullover blouse to go with the mew shorts at Ideal. This is for either boys or girls and comes in bright tropi- eal colors. And then, lest you forget, San- ta Claus will pay his last visit to Key West on Saturday night before THE night when he brings the toys to good little girls and boys. So don't forget to go down to see him if you haven't already. It’s not too late.
