Second — Lift the telephone and listen for dial tone. This is the steady hum that tells you the cen- tral office equipment is ready to re- ceive your call. REMEMBER: Never dial until you hear the dial tone. ‘POLICE DEPT. 2-6913 | FIRE DEPT. Appliances Home Appiance Company Sales and Service 605 SIMONTON ST. In a report to the House, it said “the potential evils inherent” in even limited government censor- ship “might be even greater than the evils that such controls might be designed to remedy.” The comments and conclusions came from a special House Inter- state Commerce subcommittee created last May to try to find a way to “eliminate offensive and undesirable radio and television programs.” The group was headed | by Rep. Harris (D-Ark). While the formal report was crit- ical of some programs and forms of advertising, it said the commit- tee believes the radio-TV industry is making progress in self-discip- line which, ‘“‘so long as the public interest is, served, is preferable to government-imposed regulation.” Other highlights of the report: FOR OPPERATING KEY WEST'S DIAL PHONE SYSTEM EFFICIENTLY ring ( Bldg. & Home Needs K. The law requires state officers and employes to swear they are not affiliated with the Communist Party or any other organization that advocates violent overthrow of government. It also requires a promise to take up arms in de- fense of the United States. | Justice Clark, who wrote the court’s main opinion, said: “Indiscriminate classification of of commercial sponsors in cultural and educational programs. 5. The committee was “im- pressed with the efforts of the radio and television industry and the manufacturers of distilled spir- its’ to eliminate all advertising of such products on radio and tele- vision, innocent with knowing activity must fall as an assertion of ar- bitrary power. The oath offends due process.” Justices Black and Frankfurter wrote separate concurring opin- ions. Justice Jackson took no part in the case, making the vote 8 to 0. Validity of the law was question- ed by seven former teachers of the Oklahoma Agricultural and Me- chanical College. They declined to take the oath and were fired on May 21, 1951. Each had a contract of employ- ment extending until June 30, 1951. It was stipulated in Oklahoma courts that none of the teachers was connected with a subversive organization.
