Previously, the Bevanites had filied only four of the 25 seats on the committee, The Bevan victory was somewhat surprising in view of reports reaching America that he was losing favor among the rank and file of the Labor Party. His recent Victory indicates that the Labor Party will now tend more to the Left and that, if it regains power, it will seek to na- tionalize more industry and adopt more of the forms of socialistic government. Mr. Clement Attlee, former Prime Minister, is still the titular and actual leader of the Labor Party, and de- spite the Bevan victory, maintains a solid grip on the Party. Mr. Herbert Morrison, who was defeated in a bid for membership on the national executive committee, but who retains his position as deputy leader of the Party, told the delegates, and especially the Left Wing bloc, that world economic problems could not be.solved without the United States and that world development without the United States was a “pipe dream.” f The results of the Labor Party’s national conference how that the Left Wing bloc, while gaining power, is not wet in control of the Labor Party, and that a majority of Labor Party leaders favor close cooperation with the . For that matter, a man’s mind does a pretty good job of healing itself, too, although there is always a tender spot left in the scar tissue. What was left in me of all those distant battles — the heat and cold, the mud, the spent blood, the growling guns, the peo- ple begging for bread in ruined towns? Oddly, the first thing I remem- bered was a boy’s white face, cry- ing silently. He was a ragged Italian child, and an American medic was sprinkling sulfa powder on a gaping shell wound in his head and the wound was so in- fected the smell from it sickened the soldier. “If the boy could get some real care,” said the medic. “But after we move on—I’m afraid —” | We did move on.
