Sports Roundup By GAYLE TALBOT NEW YORK w—A nation which has carried the horse opera to the farthest reaches of the uni verse will find it hard to take, but the fact seems to be that we're not raising riders who can take a cayuse over a fence as the buckaroos of England and a number of other European coun- tries. Who says so? Only Bill Stein- kraus, who at 26 is widely re- garded as our top horseman and was a star member of the Ameri- can equestrian team which finished third in the recent Olympic games. The young man from Westport, Conn., speaks from dirst-hand ex- perience. “We've got lots to learn about ays Bill, who took up the sport at 11. “E lish and European youngsters ews ride rings around American kids and take jumps that would be rough for adults. “Looking ahead, our only hope in the 1956 Olympics is to train our boys and mounts as hard as possi- ble and then send them abroad in 1955 to meet the toughest foreigg competition before they face the world in Australia. If we do that we'll have a chance.” In case there’s an Olympic pros- pect in the family and a horse in the side yard, Steinkraus says the Sport!’ at the right t, but big secret of getting over a barrier does not lie in yelling “Up, rather in helping a mount to hit proper stride just before the fence. A handy thing to know “While everyone might not agree,” Bill explains, “I think that 80 per cent of the job is in the approach to the fence. Once you "| get the horse there and he's as right for his jump as you can help him to be, it’s simple—pro- viding you don’t fall off.” The only inference we can draw from this is that horses are not as bright as they appear to be in the movies, and that our young riders should be told as much straight out if we can expect them to win any medals. Euro- pean youngsters presumably have known this all along. Steinkraus is a product of Yale, though he does not hold this to be an absolute requisite for good horsemanship. It only helps. When he isn’t on a jumper he plays viola in the Connecticut Symphony. He served three years in the China- Burma-India Theater without see- ing a horse except at a distance. The American team to oppose Ireland, Canada and Mexico in the spectacular jumping events likely will be composed of Stein- kraus, Arthur MecCashin of Pluck emin, N. J., and Mrs. Carol Du- rand of Kansas City. We've reached the point, in other words, where frailer sex to try to stand off the countries which really know how to handle a horse.
