Mrs. Roberts Honored By Church Sat. Charter Member Of Key West Sabbath School Feted At Services Mrs. Myrtle Roberts of 1007 Fleming Street received special honors Sat. as the Key West Seventh-day Adventist church paused with fellow churches, the world around to observe the 100th anniversary of Adventist Sabbath schools. With thirty-five years of contin- uous Sabbath school membership, Mrs. Roberts who is nearly 85 years old, tops the list of long- time Sabbath schoot members in the local church. She first enrolled in 1917 when the Key West Sabbath school was first organized. There were about 25 members at that time. Mr. and Mrs Roberts were instrumental in holdin. the group together through the vears when there was no pas- tor and the membership fluctuat- ed because of deaths and members coming and going. Mr. passed away twelve years ago. Mrs. Roberts has held the offices of secretary, treasurer, Sabbath school teacher and assistant sup- erintendent. Two other persons, Mrs. Texas Hood and Miss Adalia Sawyer al- so members of the original group, are still active in the present Sab- bath school and church services held at 1215 Petronia Street. i. L. Matthews, recently ap- pointed pastor, presented the hon- ors as part of the centennial pro- gram. The pastor revealed that there are now 17,373 Sabbath schools with a world membership of 1,034,060. Since the first Sab- bath school was_ started in Rochester, N. Y. in 1852, lie stated, more than $81,000,000 has been contributed through this branch of the church to spread the gospel overseas. Roberts | HOLLYWOOD NOTES By BOB THOMAS HOLLYWOOD (® —Every actor should make his own declaration of independenc>, declares Jack Car-) son. The hulking comic made his own two years ago when he broke with Warner Brothers. He severed rela- tions after 11 profitable years with the studio. “It was very nice making a for- tune with the studio,” said Carson, “and I could have stayed there and continued making big money until 1954. But sometimes you have to start thinking about your career and not just the money you’re making. “I realized two years ago that I wasn’t getting any place at War- ners. I was their handy man. Whenever they needed a few laughs ina * ‘ure, they’d say, ’Let’s get good old Jack.’ It’s no secret that in the ‘Two Guys’ series I did with Dennis Morgan, I wrote three- quarters of the script. “We'd arrive on the set and everybody would sit down and say, ‘What can we do now that would be funny?’ So I’d come up with something. Now I only know two gags. so you can see how many variations I had to dream up.” Since leaving the Burbank lot, Carson has been having a ball, as the old expression goes. He has made a big splash on the television scene, performed in his first New York play, “Of Thee I sing,” and is currently appearing with Esther Williams in ‘Dangerous When Wet.” He added that the moola has been as abundant as during his Warners tenure. The independent field has lately proven profitable to a number of stars, including Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Humphrey Bogart, Alan Ladd, Tyrone Power. All of them gained virtual independence after lengthy exclusive contracts. Of course, there are others whose ca- reers have hit the skids after they were released by their studios. But we won't talk about them. I asked Carson if he had any re- grets at getting into TV so early. “Not at all; I’m glad I did,” he replied. ‘In the first place, I think it’s exciting to get into a new field at the beginning. It gives you a feeling of pioneering. And it’s fun to develop new things.
