Sawyer was approached by Abe Aronovitz, president of the Key West Kennel club to give his opin- ion on the dog track on Stock Island. “At that time I informed him, “wrote Sawyer, ‘that since I had never lived in a community where a dog track existed, 1 could not answer his question in fairness to him or myself. I told him I would give him my answer as soon as I could contact the Sheriffs in the counties where tracks now exist. I knew these Sheriff's would give me their honest opinion, for they are all honorable men. “After hearing from them,” Saw- yer said, “I am now convinced that the dog track would help and not hurt our county, for not one of them had a bad word to say against a dog track. There replies are on file in my office and since they are too lengthy to print, I will quote parts of some of them.” Below are the quotations ab- Sheriffs of counties in which rae- ing goes on. : Rex Sweet, Sheriff, Duval coun- iy: “In my opinion the race track located in this county has not at- tracted or brought into the county any undesirable persons.” John F. Kirk, Sheriff Palm Beach County: “The race track has helped the county from a tourist standpoint. 4 is conducted on a very high lev- el.” Hugh Culbertson, Sheriff, Hills- borough county: “I have no information that would cause me ‘to think that the track located in my county has brought in undesirable persons.” R. L. Hendrick, Sheriff, Escam- bia County: “I find that our track brings in a good number of tourists who always spend money and are a god class of people.” J. B. “Sonny” Henderson, aher- iff Dade County: “In my opinion it is of great bes nefit to our city and county and contributes its share in attracting and holding tourists.” Sawyer sums up: “After carefully reading their re- plies, I am now of the opinion that all the voters should go to the polls on September 30 and vote ‘Yes’ for the track.” stracted from the letters of five Signed: Berlin A.
