Added to the satire was a pantomine of a swing band | whooping it up. The man in the , back of the stage was Fred Sch- tuba in pantomine, not doing a | hula. The fixed grin of the drum- mer, Bob Smith, was exactly like | that of big name-drummers who | clown for added attraction. Credit to Norman Street for the lighting should be mentioned. Shop Hopper Jaxson’s birthday | dinner at her house this past week | was enlivened by a long distance | phone call from Ronnie who is sta- | tioned in Jamaica. He'll probably | have some wierd tales to tell if he makes any trips back through the hills. I motored from Kingston to! Ochos Rios across the island and both daylight and night hours throbbed with the sound of drums | up in the hills. Each time we arriv- | ed at a remote village, the inhabi- | tants were out on the road to greet us with articles for sale. Our arri- val was heralded by the drums, well in advance. STRANGE SIGHT was the Kings- ton take off at the Glass Bucket on the forbidden Pocomania rites. | An acolyte, a priest and a wo- man dressed like Aimee Semple | MarPherson appeared with a group of chanters, drummers, garlands of flowers, chickens, goats and a don-| key to go through a fascinating ce- remony which combined Church of England pomp and voodoo rites, subdued of course. The real thing, of which we caught just a glimpse on a moonlipht night out beyond Spanish Town, was almost terrify- ing and our host dragged us away from the crowd when the priestess | fell in the center of the assembled jumbo phrases. Our host said it was best we leave at that stage. I never quite forgave him for my curiosity had been whetted sharp- ly by the fanatical overtures. The affair was held in honor of the new pre- | sident of the club, Lion Enrique Esquinaldo. | As the Lions and their guests | entered the Den, each lady was | presented with a favor in the form of a stick of cologne. The interior of the buiding was decorated wth colorful balloons. Table decorations | consisted of flowers and greenery. Folowing singing of America and the salute to the flag Lion Chap- lain John A. What saves the picture from ove sentimental dosage are the terrific battlefront scenes, the Air Force) raids and the fierce fighting be- tween the Commies and the ground forces in hand to hand fighting. Most tense episode is the vance of Chinese Communists through infiltration of the lines. Carrying guns, grenades and rifles, they secret themselves among re- fugees and attempt to break through the United Nations line. Mitchum is faced with the prob- lem of killing innocent Koreans along with the invaders. There are a great many grue- some shots: a man caught by a flame-thrower; bayoneting; a drop from a burning plane in which the parachuting pilot gets almost to earth before his ’chute is riddled. In contrast, the grim realism is too often saturated with cloying scenes which are not necessary to the hard-hitting main plot.
