In discussing hurricanes, Gold- smith outlined the basic rules for tafety in the event a disaster should strike. He recommended that homes be battened down se- curely with special attention being given to windows. He suggested that one window be left open on the leeward side of the house to prevent pressure from building up inside of the house. Goldsmith warned the public not to leave shelter when, the winds @issipate since it is possible that the “eye” of the storm is passing ever. This often takes an hour after which the winds will resume fromthe opposite direction, some- times in even gerater intensity, The window that had been left open should be closed and another opened on the opposite side of the Goldsmith also outlined the his- tory of the United States Weather Bureau which was founded in 1870, The Key West weather station, he said, was one of the first to be set up. In speaking of the characteris- ties of the atmosphere, the weath- erman said that a hurricane is simply an “overgrown thunder. j storm”. Switz has successfully evaded the law for 18 months only to be cap- tured on the tip of a small boy who recognized his picture in the police station. While playing on the beach, the older lad spotted a crab and ran after it “to give it to Paul.” The elder Doyal said that when his back was turned, he heard a thud and when he turned around Morton was lying facé down in the sand.
