Attorney for Plaintiff. july 19-26 ;aug2-9,1952 Escape Apparatus Found In Jail MIAMI (®# — Discovery of a 60- foot rope of knotted bed sheets in an empty county jail cell may have nipped an escape plot by bank robber George Heroux. Jailer Tex Berger found the rope Friday and investigation disclosed that a padlock had been pried off the door to an elevator shaft on the 22nd floor, where Heroux has been held since his capture July 25 following a gun battle with po- lice. Chief Deputy Hal McIntyre said suspicion centered on the 22-year- old Heroux—one of the FBI's ten “most wanted” criminals—because “he’s the only ome on the 22nd! floor who would have had a chance to use the rope.” Nation’s Weather More showers moved toward the South Saturday and govern- ment weather forecasters looked Ens. Charles Lewi: Official U.S. Navy Photo Ensign Charles G. Lewis, USNR, son by previous marraage of Mrs. Merle Landis, 115 S. Pine St., Sey- mour, Ind., has recently completed a four months course in All Wea- ther Flight at the Fleet All Wea- ther Training Unit, Atlantic, Key West, Fla. The course consists of advanced flight training in in- struments and night tactics de- signed to qualify the pilot for Car- rier All Weather Squadrons. Ensign Lewis enlisted in the Navy in April 1948 and was sub- sequently selected to enter flight training as an aviation cadet in the Navy V—5 program. In Dec- ember 1951, he was designated a naval aviator after completing the prescribed flight training course at Pensacola, Fla. He is a graduate of Shields High School in Seymour, Nerve Gases for a complete breakup of the drought in that area. Recent rains have eased drought conditions in New England and the Southeast, but Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky and Tennessee still are crops and pastures mounting. Widely scattered showers sprin- kled parts.of Arkansas and show- erg were forecast over the week end or within five days for most of the critical area. The Agriculture Department worked out a plan Friday for get- ting surplus hay from five Mid- western states into drought-plagued Kentucky and Tennessee, The gov- ernment will foot part of the bill. Secretary of Agriculture Bran- nan also announced he has asked the railroads to cut freight rates on hay shipments to the two states from Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, Illinois and Indiana. The railroads turned down an earlier government suggestion of reduced rail freight rates to all areas that suffered drought dam- age. Brannan said he does not believe the drought, which destroyed an es- timated billion dollars worth of crops and pastures, will cause ei- ther a food shortage or a material rise in food prices. He said farm production in other areas should offset the loss. Showers also occurred Friday in the Upper Mississippi Valley and along the Atlantic Coast. Fair weather prevailed in the Far West and over much of the Rockies and Great Plains. Cooler weather came to the up- per areas of the Midwest and along the Middle Atlantic Coast. A heavy fog destroyed visibility in Boston Harbor, delaying all shipping. Planes were grounded at Logan Airport. Are Developed LONDON — Effects of new “nerve gases” which give no warn- ing of their presence and can kill almost instantly have been de- scribed by Britain’s ministry of supply. The ministry did not say, how- ever, whether use of the gases in modern warfare was practical. It also gave no indication of what nation or nations might have them, i age of Key West 604 Duval St. Phone 1761 Overseas Transportation Company, Inc.
