Neighbors of Swift said today that he had an excellent reputation here in Key West. Known to be quiet and temperate in his habits by those who knew him, he is said to have been operating the shrimp boat in partnership with a Key West man. The trouble with the Mexican government came about when the ‘Surprise’, and three other Amer- ican boats, who were fishing out of ng | Tampa were accused by the Mex- ican officials to be trawling in waters restricted to fishermen from this country. Switz was taken into custody at that time and his boat was impounded by the Mexi- unboat. Switz was later re- ed without penalty, but only af- ter intervention by the U. S. State Department. The affair nearly pre- | cipitated an international: incident when the Associated Press carried the story throughout the country. The wife of Switz was arrested for investigation, but later releas- ed.
