The victory was doubly sweet to} local fandom, for it was behind the | three hit twirling of Key West's} own George Vidal that they gained the win. The All Stars have won 4 out of their 5 last baligames putting them just 7% games behind the 7th place Lakeland baseballers. Elsewhere in the loop, Miami shaded the Havana Cubans, 1-0 in RENE SOLIS 10 innings; Tampa trimmed West Palm Beach 2-1 and Miami Beach thrashed St. Petersburg, 18-2 with | @ 20 hit barrage. Meanwhile, just a few technical | details remained to be ironed out | before the Key West Baseball | Club officially takes over the All | Stars. | The signing of the official fran- chise agreement is set for today after which it will be mailed to| lop prexy Henry S, Baynard inj Tampa. At a special meeting of the City Commission last night, a three year lease on the Wieker’s Field Stadium was worked out. And after a talk | with the man who has pulled some pretty fantastic baseball feats in |his time we saw the reason behind the happy grin. It seems that Ray Ryan is never happier than when he has a last place ballclub to play around with. The fact that in the Conchs, he hes a team that is currently miged deep in the cellar, eight mired deep in the cellar, eight games behind the seventh place Lakeland club and thirty one off the pace of the league leading | Miami Sun Sox, doesn't seem to | worry Ray a bit. The white haired jovial baseball | sage did mention that he might need another starting pitcher but otherwise he thinks he’ll put his faith in Manager Barney Lutz and the present squad which has won 4 of it’s last five ballgames. Ryan’s reputation for rejuvenat- ing last place ball clubs began back in 1913 when he took over the Norfolk, Va. elub then languishing in the basement 12 games gut of 7th and in 30 days he had them up in fifth place. If fifth place doesn’t seem too terrific--it must be pointed out that all this took place in just 30 days. He pulled off the same trick with the Cedar Rapids club in the Cen- tral, Association and at Allentown in 1935. And Ryan is no stranger to the Florida international loop. In 19- | | 48, he took over the Lakeland club when it was deep in seventh place. As general manager of the club he engineered some sharp horse trading after the club ‘had lost 11 out of 13 games. The five performers he picked up turned out to be pretty hot baliplayers and the team turned up in third place within @ month. They fin- ished in that spot and went on to battle Hay the playoffs. With the current deficit, local fans agen't expecting any miracles but if the Conch’s fight their way out of the cellar, chances are Ray | yap will have a lot to do with it ‘Navy Commis Commissary \Gets 3 Reeruits Three more seamen apprentices jhave reported to the Commissary |Dept. as their new duty stations on the Key West Naval Base.
