Page 4 THE KEY WEST CIT iZEN Saturday, May 24, 1952 Rey. Ashworth To Deliver Sermon Sunday Sunday School at the Fleming Street Methodist Church, corner Fleming and William Streets, will convene at 9:45 a.m. Mr. Claude E. Salis is general Superintendent and there are classes for all ages. The Sunday School maintains a nursery, under the direction of | trained caretakers, through all services of the day. This service is for all parents who care to attend the services, and they are invited to make use of it. At the hour of morning worship, | end throughout the day, all ser-| vices will be centered about the Al-| dersgate experience of Mr. John| Wesley, the father of Methodism, as it was out of his heart warm-| ing experience that the Methodist Chureh was korn. On the evening of May 24, 1738, | as Mr. Wesley heard the reading | of the preface to the Epistle to the | Romans, by Martin Luther he| said, “I felt my heart strangely warmed. I felt I did trust in Christ, Christ alone, for salvation; and an | assurance was given me that he | had taken away my _ sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death.” The pastor, the Rev. W. J. Ash- | worth, will preach at the morning | hour, 10:50 o'clock from the sub- ject, “The Authority of Religious | Experience.” The organist Miss | Martha Morris, will play as a pre- lude, ‘‘Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life,” by Herbert and the choir will sing} as an anthem, “Let Us Sing Unto | * the Lord,” by Jordan. ; At the evening hour the pastor's mesage will be based on the sub- | _Ject, ‘The Restlessness of the Soul that is Without God.” The choir will sing, ‘Whispering Hope,” by Hawthorne. “Observing Memorials” Is Sermon Topic Sun. On Sunday the; worship First | Methodist (Old Stone) Church | the pastor, the Rev. J. Paul! Touchton, will be speaking on “Observing Memorials.” As far back as the days of the ancient Hebrews men have had | occasions of remembering im-| portant events. As Joshua led the Children of Israel into the Prom- ised Land he had the men to set up twelve stones in the River| Jordan that future generations seeing them might remember the goodness of God in bringing them into the land. Every people has its memorials that bear a message often of sacrifice. Memorial Day, May 30, has been created by the National Government but it had its rise in| the custom of placing flowers on | the graves of dead loved ones just | after the war between the states. | For Christians the greatest memorial of all is that typified in the holy communion when we morning at service at the partake of the elements which| and Mrs. Carl Garcia, Missiona- Tepresent the sufferings nd {ties to Gallup, New Mexico for death of Jesus Christ. People are funny is not only true on radio, but through letters as well. I feel sorry for the young Navy fellow who thought he married a wife and discovers he has a mother-in-law to live with thrown in. Perhaps this sailor is smarter than his mother-in-law gives him credit for. It is possible that a permanent chaperone after marriage is no longer de- sired by this navy man, so he re- quested transfer to “Rebel Coun- try” hoping to shake off the shackles of the staunch republi- can mother-in-law. No such luck, Sailor, she’s going to stick it out if it kills her, but her letter to the Bremerton Sun shows she’s not liking it. This mother-in-law claims to feel the water shortage in Key West. Bet her son-in-law sailor at times would like to remedy that. Yet there’s a pretty stiff penalty for drowning mother- in-laws. This woman put in writing that she despises Key West. That’s OK with us, but why is she staying until July? Hasn't anyone told her about the busses leaving Key West every two hours and the fast plane flights| out of the city? Since her daugh- ter registered here as a democrat, Stewardship Of Faith Is Sermen year qute nies. | Subject Sunday The most amusing part of our | critic’s letter refers to our Key | West politics as shocking. I guess} it is quite a shock in thes troubled times to learn of a ci where the people are so w pleased with the way thi after Sunday’s sermon topics at Ley Memorial Methodist Church, Tru- man Avenue and Georgia Street, 1L| will conclude the current series on | morning worship hour the pastor, thé Rev. Eldon Simmons, will} speak on “The Faith of A Christian Steward,” and at the 7:30 evening hour his topie will be “Abraham-- Man Of Faith.” The Woman’s Society Of Chris- tian Service will meet in the Church Annex on Monday evening , at 7:30. A number of important | matters are on the agenda, among | which are the final reports for this Church year and the lection of of- | ficers for the new year which be- | gins June 1. The regular mid-week worship service is scheduled for 7:30 Wed- nesday evening. CHURCH ot CHRIST Ashby and Von Phister Streets holding public office and show it with their votes. In our last elec- tion here practically all encum- bents desiring to remain in office were re-elected. The people her« need recreation the same as those in your city of Bremerton, Wash- ington. Personally, I like to see doggies run around the track and welcome a chance to place a couple dollars or so now and then on the one I think will be first across the finish line. If I lose, T'll charge it to recreation—same as most Bremertoniaps would charge off a pair of skis that may become broken in an attempt to jump an obstacle on a ski run. Snow and mountains are as scarce as mosquitoes in Key West, so don’t blame us too much if we decide to have a dog track. Sincerely, THEODORE NESS, Key West, Florida “Wants Conch Recipes” surely this mother-in-law can’t expect to turn all us Key West- ers into republicans if she can’t even convince her own daughter on the republican doctrine. In the following letter sent to- day for publication in the Brem- erton Sun, I have taken the liberty of an American Citizen to give a few true facts about Key West, Florida: Editor, the Bremerton Sun: As a Key Wester for twelve years, I, among many other Key Westers, was greatly concerned upon learning that false state- ments concerning éur city was spread before the readers of your newspaper. One of your readers, a friend of our Mayor, defended us magnificently and I, along with many other Key Westers wish to extend our hearty thanks to Mr. Doll. Seems a mother-in- law who has attached herself to a Navy man and wife here has | been spreading malicious gossip about our fair city that she in- vented without foundation or fact. Key West, with its frost free climate, has rose to promin- ence since many Americans, cluding President Truman, dis- covered it to be an Island Pare- dise. Many former Northerners, like myself, discovered Key West through military service in World War II. At the present time so many people want to live in Key West that there is a temporary shortage of water. Large storage tanks are now being built* that will cure this shortage. Due to the fact this island is located so| | far out at sea, the temperature is | lower in summer then in most northern cities. The ocean around us that keeps this island cool in summer also acts to keep it! warmer in winter. Sudden| changes in temperatures are not prevalent here and Key West is known to have the most equable | climate in the country, with an | | average change of only 14° Fahr- enheit. In every edition as far! back as I can remember our! local newspaper, The Key West | | Citizen, has on its upper left | hand front page, stressing this fact about our even year around t your readers straight | quitoes in Key West, | mes here are unscreened and _ mosquitoes On the outskirts of t re are some mosq the modern mosqui program now in effect * will soon be obs | e woman critic of Key West} we have continuous w: s en keep the ed.
