Both Narvey an voting for the le @ opposed to a dog track, 1 uerely voted for the lease in order to allow the City of Key West the chance to vote on the measure. Mayor, Harvey stressed at the April 21 meeting: 1. That the city commissioners were voting solely on the lease, not on the dog track---the voters would do that. 2. A guaranteed $10,000 annually would be lost. 3. That all evils would still be present if the dog track is built on either Stock Island or Big Coppitt Key as would be present if constructed city-owned Stock Island property. 4. That by voting for the lease, city commissioners would not. be making a moral decision for the people of Key West but would be | seeing that the City got the best deal possible. 5. Some eight years ago, the peopie of Key West voted in re- ferendum to sell-the same land to dog track interests for $8,000.
