The plane, en route from Rio to New York with 41 passengers and a crew of nine, was due at Port of Spain at 8:21 a. m. EST today, Pan American said the message from Brazil said the Clipper was last in radio contact with Barrei- tas, Brazil, at 1:15 a. m. today, The plane left Rio at 9:43 p. m. Monday. The company, in announcing that an emergency exists, said that disruption of radio contact with a plane was not unusual, and often is due to atmospheric con- ditions. It said the U. S. Army and Navy and the Brazilian Air Force were assisting in an attempt to locate the plane. from the U.S. Naval Station, Key West, to Subic Bay, Philippine Islands for further transfer. Bur- bage has been in Key West since October, 1951. Burbage, who previously spent two years in the U. S.. Rathsack been in Key West since November, 1950, when he reported from recruit training, Great Lakes, Illinois.
