The plane, en route from Rio to New York with 41 passengers and a crew of nine, was due at Port of Spain at 8:21 a. m. EST today, Pan American said the message from Brazil said the Clipper was last in radio contact with Barrei- tas, Brazil, at 1:15 a. m. today, The plane left Rio at 9:43 p. m. Monday. The company, in announcing that an emergency exists, said that disruption of radio contact with a plane was not unusual, and often is due to atmospheric con- ditions. It said the U. S. Army and Navy and the Brazilian Air Force were assisting in an attempt to locate the plane. from the U.S. Naval Station, Key West, to Subic Bay, Philippine Islands for further transfer. Bur- bage has been in Key West since October, 1951. Burbage, who previously spent two years in the U. S.. Marine Corps, entered the Naval service during World War Il, serving aboard the Naval Air Station, Orote, Guam; Naval Communi- cations Station, Kodiak, Alaska; Naval Station, Green © Cove Spring, Florida; and Naval Sta- tion, Key West, He served with the Marines in China. He earned the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal; American Area medal; China Service medal; and World War II Victory medal. Burbage also proudly wears the good conduct medal. He was born in Burnettsville, Indiana, and attended high school there, His wife is the former Willie Lee Lott, of Ala- paka, Georgia. They have three ehildren. : Robert W. Rathsack, Jr., sea- man, was transferred from the Commissary Store, U.S. Naval Station, Key West. He will report, after 10 days leave in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, to the U.S.S, Mount Olympus, communications ship No. 8 at Va. Rathsack been in Key West since November, 1950, when he reported from recruit training, Great Lakes, Illinois. Before his entry into the Naval Service, Rathsack graduated from Lincoln High School, Manitowoc. He was then employed.as a fire- man, and a farmer-laborer. Rathsack is the son of Mr, and Mrs. Robert W. Ratksack, Sr. of Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Robert R. Price, yeoman sea- man apprentice, reported aboard the Naval Station yesterday. He will serve in the Military Per- sonnel Department, under Lieu- tenant Wallace G. Brownell. His duties will be clerical. Price, a graduate of yeoman school in Bainbridge, Maryland, entered the Navy October 8, 1951. He received his recruit training at San Diego, California, He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Willard W. Price, 261 Letch- worth avenue, Columbus, Ohio. Before his entry into the Naval service, Price attended Office Training School in Columbus. After serving with the Ord- nance Department, U. S. Naval Station, Key West, since Novemn- ber, 1949, Melvin M. Syme, tor- mate second class, was transferred recently.
