John D. Dickson TIT, State biolow gist sent down to the Keys to study the deer, ther feed, their size and their habits, conducted a year's re- search into the deer. His conclusion is: “It still should not be considered a ‘toy’ because even the original descriptions as above mentoned came from specimens of 65 to 80 Pounds.”’ Big Pine Key Prison Capt. R. E. Marlow also signed a statement which says: “During the almost two years that I have lived on Big Pine Key, I have seen three live deer. One of these, an eight point buck at very close range, at about 10 a.m. I would estimate this particular deer’s height at shoulder approxi- mately 35 inches. The other two mentioned above were seen in car light before daylight, crossing road in front of car at a distance and speed, that sex could not be deter- mined. However, I would estimate the height of these deer at about thirty inches.” The full statement of Dickson, biologist follows: “I was sent down here to Big Pine Key to make a year's study of the Key deer for the Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission, This particular white-tailed deer was named by Dr. Thomas Bar- bour and Dr, Glover M. Allen in 1922: Odocoileus virginianus cla- vium (See Journal of Mammology 3:65-78, May 1922.) They refer to | this deer as the smallest race of white-tailed deer in the United States. Quoting them they say, ‘A full-sized doe is reliably stated to weigh approximately 65 pounds; the larger of the two immature males (No. 18497) was said to have weighed 80 pounds.’ “I have seen a number of these deer since I have been down here on Big Pine Key (I have been here | since June 1951.) Of the 19 obser- vations I have made, only two bucks were seen (at least as far as I am sure of.)
