A tenant may NOT be evicted for failure or refusal to pay an overceiling rent or because a lease has expired. The landlord may not evict a tenant to allow occupancy by friends or rela- tives, other than parent or child Illegal evictions mav be pre- vented through several legal ac- \tions. The new rent law gives | either the tenant or the govern- | ment the right to sue a landlord | \for damages if a tenant has been | illegally evicted. Government at- | torneys may also ask for a court injunction to prevent an eviction illegally. | Any eviction in defiance of | such an injunction would place the landlord in contempt of court | and subject to such a fine or iim- prisonment as the court sees fit | to impose. e | A landlord who evicts a tenant} through legal methods and then! fails to carry out the require. ments and conditions under which he gained possession is deemed to have committed an unlawful eviction. There is one major exemption | to eviction regulations.
