Sm goper HOW CLOSE ARE WE TO WAR? ns seal How close is war to the United States? . . .. No one.can answer this question unless he is able 7 read the mind of Joseph Stalin, and the other leaders o: Soviet Russia. if it is admitted that the policies of the United States are hostile to the supremacy of Communism throughout the world and the acts of this country in fighting aggression in Korea provide ample excuse for the Communists to declare war, The question then arises whether Stalin and the other Communists will decide to wage open war upon the United States. The answer, according to most experts, is, “No.” This does not mean that, the Communists are afraid of the United States. It means that, at this stage of the game, it is probably more profitable not to have a full-scale war with the United States. ; : We should not overlook the fact that the United States at this time possesses an overwhelming supremacy in the atomic bomb. Granting that the Russians have been ableto manufacture some of these destructive agehts, the edfly start of the United States gives us a preponderance which, according to Mr: Winston Chuxthill, prefenté thé Russians trom attempting an all-out war* siete 4 FIGHT ON MALARIA NEEDS MORE D.D.1.. Malaria - control programs in many tropical and semi-tropical countries may have to be suspended because _| of the threatened shortage of D.D.T. as a result of defense production priority claims. The World. Health Organization says that fifty mil- lion persons depend for their continued well-being on an -adequate supply of cnlorine-based insecticides, of which D,D.T. isthe most important. It has reported this fact to the five nations, including the United States, which produced most of the non-Communist world’s D.D.T., pointing out that failure to receive adequate supplies might result in serious epidemics. The effort to rid the world of malaria has been un- derway for a number of years. Remarkable progress has been made in many regions when control plans have been put into operation. Improvements in the productivity of egriculture have occurred where the population has been somewhat freed from the effects of this great debilitating | disease. If the campaign against malaria is retarded by adaék! of D.D.T., the cause of world health will suffer. Neverthe-’ Jess, no intelligent person can blame the United States, fop! ex.mple, which produces about three-fourths of the world supply, from taking precautions in order to have an adequate supply in the event of an outbreak of war, Obviously, the health of our fighting men is of more im- portance to the people of this country than tne slow im- | Proyement of the health of peoples in other areas of the | earth, | 4 8 BUSINESS SHOULD AID COLLEGES Alfred P. Sloan, Jr., chairman of the board of the | General Motors Corporation, suggests that business should | help support the colleges of the nation, : + The suggestion is not as foolish as some thoughtless | people might suspect. This is what makes busine: When one general gets into polities other generals get into politics. The present generation, we are happy to report, i ikely to be an improvement on their predecessors, ig If you fail the first time, and make no correction for mistakes, there is no reason why you should not fail ~“the second time. <. =WDemoeracy is not improved by the careless Giscriminate criticism of officials, whether they local, state or federal governments. mm and in- serve CHOWDER | Trading Post. .
