There was nothing to do but go along with him and hope I could make a more con- vincing impression on the men at Heeaertors in the morning. e were just about to retire a half hour later when Greg rapped on the panel, aes he cred. iscovered another passageway. It must be much, much older than the other one. Come and help me explore it!” “Now?” I protested. “It’ midnight, man!” geen “Yes, Now, I can’t wait to find out what’s there — where it leads—” “Tl get dressed again then,” I sighed, catching Steve's nod. I'll meet you on the Smugglers’ Stair- way.” Steve handed me a_ revolver after I had finished hastily throw- ing on some clothes. “Know how to use it?” he asked, “Of course. Do you think Greg knows—that I’m technically un- der arrest?” Steve nodded. “It was he who refused to give you an alibi for the early evening. That’s why ’'m avggesting that you take the re- volver and if you need it—don’t hesitate to use it!” That gave me something to think about as I went down the Smugglers’ Stairway. Greg, my old friend, practically turning me over to the police! I intended to face him with it, but oddly enough he opened the subject first We had hardly reached the underground corridor before he asked me: “What do you know about this McCarty fellow?” “Why—” taken off guard, I had to think fast. “He’s an American “How “T've just AP Newsfeatures Black Jan Walks Again By Florence Kerrigan interested in the traditions of the castle and it was all right with Iris, so I invited him here for a day or two. She insisted that he should stay here rather than at the inn.” ‘You don’t really know him?” “Well—actually, no.” ‘Of course you know that Mal- ola Fair was killed this eve- “So they tell me,” I said, stiff- ly. “I understand I have you to thank for the fact that I am un- der arrest.” He chuckled, and I turned my flash suddenly on his face. It was impish and gleeful and more than ever like Ian. “Who would want to kill that poor half-wit?” I demanded. “Someone who thought. he knew too much,” said Greg. ‘Here's where we turn.” "THERE was a doorway under the shadow of the stairs which I had overlooked, and which Greg told me had also been unknown to him, From it» led a corridor. It was just another passageway with nothing new to recommend it, and I was becoming somewhat tired of corridors and flashlight gleams into dark corners, Greg preceded me, keeping up a run- ning comment. “I don’t believe this set of passages is mentioned anywhere in the manuscript descriptions of the castle,” he said. “I certainly don’t find it on any of my charts. What luck! Who knows what we will find!” Presently the corridor turned and opened into a circular stone room. I cast the beams of my flash around the walls which were Tog h new Ome of the liv- ing cliff. The ceiling too was of rock, and the floor, and still bore traces of the chi which had smoothed them off. As my flash traveled over the floor I saw something which made me gasp in horror. In the circle of the light lay sprawled a grue- some figure—the skeleton of a man, face downward, its fingers clutching at the rock surface, the rusted iron still on the ankles, and a crumbling iron chain at- still clung to the body. Some or the bones, I noticed were broken —whether from torture or the natural process of disintegration I did not know, and I preferred to believe the latter. It was not a very pleasant spectacle to find in a dark dungeon some time near midnight! : I had a sudden, panicky feeling that I was alone in that dark dun- geon, far under ground with only that skeleton for company. swung my flash to the place where I thought Greg might be. The face it lighted up was Ian's, regarding me with a sardonic smile. “If you would swing your flash to yonder corner,” he suggested, “you would see what happens to men who do not mind their own affairs.” : ‘ I turned the light obediently, and again it fell upon the heap of broken bones that had once been a man. “A man who thwarted me in the old days,” the voice went on —the voice which was not Greg's. | “His wife was very beautiful, and he made the mistake of thinking he could keep her when I desired her.” He paused and chuckled. “He was your kind. After his wife died, I really believe he went mad. He accused me of killing her, I don’t know why he died so quickly, I should have thought he would have lasted for years. But when some men have no resist- ance.” My mind went to Charles and our suspicions of him in connec- tion with the murder of Lansing. What part had he really played in it? How loyal was he to his master, and how much of that bank account of his was really blackmail money? Had Greg been the murderer of both Lansing and Malcolm? Had Malcolm really seen Greg kill Lansing? My hand caressed the handle of my revolver, Ian_was flesh and blood, but he was Greg, my boy- hood friend. I knew with a chill of foreboding, that it had not been a good idea to follow Greg into this passageway. He could make away with me, and I would never be found. Perhaps that was his intention. I met while I was doing research for my book, I knew he would be tached to a ring on the rocky wall, A few shreds of russet cloth» (To be continued) The WEATHERMAN Says Key West and Vicinity: Clear to partly cloudy today through Tuesday; not much temperature.
