A plane found the boat after an all-night search which continued, despite the! fact that’ one of its four engines was out of commis- sion. The plane sent out the position of the boat, and the Air Force dispatched a tug to pick up the Marines and the Bermudians. Before the tug could reach the spot, however, a British cut- ter was able to make contact with the fishing boat through in- formation from the search plane. The cutter picked up the men and headed for Bermuda, where arrangements were being made to rush them to a hospital. First reports indicate all the men are safe. The Marines were from the United States Naval op- erating base in Bermuda. Their names were not given out. Mr. Tru- | man already has called the Wis- consin Senator one of the Krem- lin’s greatest assets. In replying to McCarthy the President is likely to take up; where his Secretary of State left off. Last night the State Depart- ment made public some of the off-the-record remarks which Dean Acheson made Saturday inight before the American Soc- iety of Newspaper Editors. -Acheson didn’t name McCar- ‘thy but everybody knew he was talking about the Senator. Here are some of the things Acheson had to say about thd charges of Communism in the state department. ness” and “filthy business” used by Acheson to describe the at- tacks on the department. The Secretary of State :said there was a right way and a wrong way to go about trying to oe subversives: The mea way, “vicious mad-! said Acheson, is to use the loy- alty program which was set up while General George Marshall was Secretary of State. “The wrong way,” said Ache- son, “is to smear everybody's reputation; io make charges on the basis that, if one if not right, you try to find another one you hope will stick; try to destroy the confidence of the people in their foreign office and in their go’ ernment in one of the most crit~ tical hours of this nation’s hise , tory.” | Then Acheson goi even rough- er. He compared the McCarthy type of charges with the mass- murderer of Camden, New Jer- ;sey, Howard Unruh, who mowed down a dozen people with a re-) volver as he shot at random. What is going on in Washington, said Acheson, reminds him of ‘that case. Acheson said the State Depart+ ment has never been in better shape than at present, and is loyal to the core. McCarthy was asked what he thought about all this. His reply was that he was disappointed with Acheson's, comments. Mc- Carthy said Acheson appeared to be taking the line “that the real criminals are those who try to expose and get rid of Communists and perverts in the State Depart- ment.” PENNSY ORDERS TRAFFIC SERVICE CURTAILED TODAY PHILADELPHIA, April °24.— (#)—The Pennsylvania Railroad took advance action on the threatened firemen’s strike to- day and ordered western freight service and all long-distance pas- senger service to halt tonight.
