Monroe County Commissioners last night accepted the 15,000 cubic yards of marl that the Na- vy had offered them. The county will try to have the Dredgers’ Key operation, started as soon as Possible. The offer was made by Cap- tain C. C. Adell, USN, command- ing officer of the U.S. Naval Station. City Commissioiers had made the request at a special meeting. All marl is to be taken out by March 1, and the maximum amount that can be had is 15,000 cubic yards. From July, 1949 to January, 1950, some 95,393 cubic yards have been sold by the Navy 10 cents a yard, The amount sold each month is as follows: July, 7451; August, 9,807; Sep- tember, 11,338; October, 14,445; November, 15,236; December, 16,- 524; January, 20,792. Captain C. €. Adell stated in a letter to City Manager Ralph Spalding: “It is obviously not to the Navy’s interest to sell ma- terial it now owns for 10 cents per cubic yard, and in the future find it necessary to purchase @redged material at a much higher price.” Commissioner Joe Allen voted for acceptance of the Adell offer, but Allen thought that it was just prolonging the agony, He reasoned that thirty days from now, the public would be in the same fix. i Allen mairdained that it was the City Commissioners who forced the county to go out of the marl business. Allen said that the county and Navy could have worked out an agreement, had not the city blocked the move.
