Nationalist military spokesmen in Hong Kong disclosed today that shore-based artillery on Ha- inan has smashed several flotillas of Communist- manned boats. They said the boats were probing the island’s strength. And the Na- tionalists claim the Communist landing efforts are a prelude to a major Red assault against Hain- an, which lies off the South China Coast. Hong Kong sources have for some time predicted a Red attack in force on Hainan from the Liu- chow Peninsula, ward the island from the main- land. The peninsula recently was won by the Reds, cutting off that major escape route of Nationalist troops to the island fortress. Hainan’s commander returned only yesterday from. strategy talks on Formosa—now the Na- tionalist headquarters. Meanwhile, it’s said guerrilla action has increased in Hainan’s interior. The Nationalists believe Communist guerrillas on Hainan number between 20,000 and 50,- 000. They fear the irregulars may aid the Communists in the cru- cial hours by seizing beachheads to pave the way for Communist landings on strategic Hainan beaches. € the Board joners of Monro will ope} ‘ollowin, nection of a County, bids for the Constr ording to p! titled raton of a- portion of velt Boulevard, Key West, ording to pi and entitled “EF n of South velt' Boulevard.” Copies of specification the necessary bid information may be obtained from the Clerk of the Board of Coun Commissione Mon . ty urt House, K ¥ , upon deposit of $5.- he returned upon re- turn of specifications. For they reach- ed the area as the United States! was preparing for the biggest peacetime maneuvers in its his- tory—maneuvers involving the Army, Navy, Marihes and Air Force, and scheduled to start in January in the Caribbean area. The three vessels are said to be bound for Vladivostok from the Baltic, by way of the Panama} Canal. It’s a longer route than the run to Vladivostok through the Mediterranean and the In- dian Ocean. Authorities in: Wash- ‘ington describe the ships as fish- ing vessels. But the craft did not carry fishing gear and are equip- with very powerful radios. Altogether, 15 Russian ships have crossed the Caribbean on the way to Vladivostok during the past two and one-half years. This year’s appearance of the three shins had its parallel last year, when three similar Russian vessels reached St. Thomas in the Caribbean area just a few weeks before American maneuvers. The number of horses and mules in the U. S. has fallen from 21,431,000 in 1915 to nearly 10,- 000,000 today. In about the same period tractors have increased from a thousand to around 3,000,- 000. | LEGALS {IN JUSTICE OF THIRD COUNTY, RAY FACE COURT, DISTRICT, 2 STATE OF FLOR HOCKETT, Plaintiff, JOF }OUSA FERNANDEZ, Under and by virtu exe- cution issued in the above stated case, out of the above Court, I will {Sell at public outcry in front of the” | Court House door in Tavernier in d County, on Mon y of Janu k P.
