THE ORACLE. 1 U. S. TROOPS FOR PALESTINE? eileen Already there is speculation as to the ‘military contribution that the United <States will make if called upon by the “United Nations to help enforce a settle- “ment in Palestine. M4 Military authorities say that air sup- “port might be a comparatively easy mat- +ter because the Air Force is stretching to “Tts full strength goal, but that to send any tseldiers would strip domestic garrisons. “Most of our: forces overseas are pinned «down by occupation duties and no appre- ~ciable number could be withdrawn from Europe or Japan for policing the Middle ~East. We have no idea whether the United «Nations will call upon the United States ~for soldiers, or not. We express the opin- ~ion, however, that the people of this coun- etry will not take kindly to the loss of American lives in any fighting that may follow the effort to establish a homeland »for the Jews in Palestine. . If the Arabs surprise the international Texperts.whg attempt to implement the “partition and put on a full-scale ‘military "campaign, involving heavy fighting and ~serious loss of life, the American officials “who so glibly accepted the obligation and responsibility will hear from the people “of this country in rather positive terms. ere = ANNIVERSARY - The anniversary of the attack upon ‘Pearl Harbor passed with relatively little “attention on the part of the people of the “United States. This is just as well. Certainly, there seems to be no reason for us to carry out _the suggestion, made a few years ago, that the anniversary of the attack become a national holiday. Regardless of many factors that tend to excuse the defenders of the island from being taken by surprise, the fact is ‘that _the nation was stunned by the disaster. Moreover, the enemy acquired a consid- erable control over vast areas of the Pa- _cifie as a result of the catastrophe. ———+ The fact that most writers, and speak- ers, are unfamiliar with their subjects, is not apparent to those who know less about «them. If we had no faults ourselves, we should not take so much delight in noting ~those of other people. Faults, like misery, love company. COUGH UP! The Citizen, in common with newspa- pers throughout the United States, ap- plauded congress when it passed a law prohibiting portal-to-partal payments, and thereby squashing scores of suits of that nature which had been instituted in fed- eral courts, But congressmen squirmed and side- stepped when a similar matter hit at their pocketbooks. They collect from the gov- ernment 20 cents a mile each way when they go back to their homes and return to Washington. If they travel by train or in their automobiles, the cost will be con- siderably under five cents a mile, yet they gouge 20 cents out of Uncle Sam. That’s a_ portal-to-portal handout, milking the government of money in the guise of expenses, three-quarters of which are not incurred. The Associated Press reported that, on Wednesday, members of the House of Representatives “applauded but rejected” a proposal that they “make a little sacri- fice” by “giving up their customary mile- age allowances.” In view of the increase of salaries of congressmen this year by $2,500, exempt from income tax, and an extra $2,500 for expenses, one would have thought that, in the interest of governmental economy house members would have readily ac- ceded to the proposal to forego the. collec- ‘tion of that 20 cents a mile in going to and from their homes for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. But not so; they ap- plauded the proposal and then defeated it by a standing vote of 143 to 27. Hurrah! Dandy, dandy! It’s in accord- ance with the Christmas spirit of—getting all we can! Away with portal-to-portal pay, but as for us—cough up that 20 cents a mile! i There are people who do not believe in fairies, but they play the horses, just the same, “UNDEMOCRATIC” The effort of various minorities to put over the idea that it is undemocratic for any group of Americans to restrict mem- bership is meeting with some opposition. Recently, in New York, David Em- bury took the position, in a public, address, that fraternities have “the démocratic right” to place racial and_ religious re- strictions on their memberships and as- serted that college administrators did not have the right to “dictate” to campus fraternities about their membership re- strictions. There has been a great deal of care- less thinking on this subject in the United States. Certainly, if members of a minor- ity group have the right to form an asso- ciation for the purpose of their own bene- fit, they have no right to object to the for- mation of similar groups by any collection of individuals for any similar purpose. We have reached the stage in the United States where the majority of the population is unorganized but constantly assailed by aggressive and, to a large ex- tent, selfishly-directed organizations. If the process continues unchecked, the time will come when the nation will be run for the benefit of a collection of minorities and the vast majority of the people of the country will not have the rights that the minorities have acquired for themselves. While we have no sympathy with ra- cial or religious prejudices, there are oc- casions when every race and every religion has the right to organize along strictly racial or religious lines. In addi- tion, individuals have a right to organize along any lines which seem essential to them. So long as they do not conspire to injure others, there is nothing basically wrong with the association. No matter what you look for, the year 1948 will give you some surprises, ee DANGEROUS DECORATIONS The Christmas holiday season, with trees, decorations and candles, will be cel- ebrated in Key West, but it is very im- portant for all of us to understand the danger that comes from the use of inflam- mable decorations. Christmas lights should be checked, before being used again. The lights should be switched off when the house is vacated. All other decorations should be carefully used and fire extinguishers or a water supply should be instantly available. We know there are many who will read this article with a smile, but if it causes one parent to do something that prevents a fire and the possible loss of life, it will be worth writing.
