Watson, ™ | Tallahassee, Florida Dear Tom: 3 Did you enjoy reading about the 2 | dedication by the President of the Unit- *| ed States of the Everglades National J) Park? rs THE ORACLE. z TEAMWORK me Asin <2 is the spirit of democracy. ‘= It is the spirit which hat transformed the United States in ‘less than two centuries from a’smal] group of colonies huddled on a» the Atlantic shore to a mighty world pow- er, Teamwork has: pushed forward the frontiers in every field of endeavor. Your postman has brought you a let- ter from the Key West Tuberculosis Asso- ciation containing the 1947 Christmas = Seals. The picture on the Seal showing a ‘~ patient, hardworking team of oxen haul- + ing a load of Christmas trees well illus- * trates the spirit of community teamwork 2’ which has carried forward the fight against tuberculosis. When you * buy Christmas Seals you are part of the team : working toward ultimate eradication of a - disease which takes an annual toll of 53,- 000. lives. You want to know how your Seal Sale dollars are spent. The first five per cent goes to the National Tuberculosis Associa- tion fromi which a large part is returned to this community in the results of medi- cal research and in advice on the best ways of meeting local tuberculosis prob- lems. The other 95 per cent is spent in this state, some for state-wide serv- ices and the remainder on specific tuber- culosis control projects carried on by the “Key West Tuberculosis - this county. Health. education is the foundation stone of the program. The association car- ries on a year-round campaign using lit- erature, radio, films, slides, exhibits, post- ers and talks aimed at the needs and in- terests of specific groups. Facts rather than fears are the weapons used to fight tuberculosis. Gase-finding is an impertant part of the program. The eventual aim is to have every citizen given a chest X- Ray annually to protect the , community from. unknown cases which spread the disease. The association also works to im- .|. prove treatment facilities and'to aid in the rehabilitation and readjustment ‘of pa- i tients to afmily and community. * The sale of Christmas Seals is the sole support of this campaign to insure your health. The teamwork of the entire com- .. munity is needed to make it a success. ——$—$<$__ It is quite natural when a politician - holds one or even two political jobs, he is displeased when there is expressed op- Pe ae } By tata [25 97454931 stats? x4. position in the local press against the procurer of his sinecures, ONCE ON, NEVER OFF Florida State Chamber of Com- merce held. a debate recently on a pro- posed sales tax for Florida, but no decision was announced after. speakers concluded their argument. The chamber feels a tax of that nature should be left to the people of Florida to decide, But why impose any more taxes in Florida? Floridians’ backs are now creak- ing with tax loads, made up of dozens of different things, many of them essentials of life. There was a time, as late as two de- cades ago, when taxes in Florida were among the lowest in the 48 states, but new tax measures have been thought up by the legislature until: now. Florida is brack- eted among the states with the highest taxes. As was proved at the debate, the tax structure in Florida has been increasing biennially, without an exception, for the last 50 years. And while: state taxes have been mounting, city and county taxes have been mounting, too, so that the people of Florida, aside from federal taxes, are pay- ing in taxes a larger percentage of every dollar they earn than ever before. And, judging from what was said at the debate, the end is not yet in sight. The 1949 legislature is likely to fall in line with every succeeding legislature for half acentury in building up a larger tax structure. Speakers agreed at the debate that ance a law is passed creating new taxes it is never repealed, even though the new tax ends the alleged purpose for which. it. was. created. That practice would be true also, were a sales tax adopted. Aside from the multi- farious bookkeeping to which merchants would be subjected, a sales tax would mean the employment of hundreds of oth- er bureaucrats in Florida. Molotov calls Americans “imperial- ists,” but no one will pay much attention to his name-calling as long as he doesn’t hurl the epithet, “Communists.” That’s a fighting word in the American language. PEACE ON EARTH Less than a year ago we heralded in this space something new in radio — a sponsored programs in which the teachings of the Bible were dramatized on a plane higher than any achieved in the past. These Sunday evening broadcasts have a great spiritual lesson yet the telling of them is in a language and a style which hold one’s interest with the same fascina- tion as the great plays of the theatre. We have been so moved by these broadcasts that on two previous occasions we have called to your attention the many fine things we felt they were accomplish- ing in these times of grave world conflict. Today we want again to recommend “The Greatest Story Ever Told,” which the series is called, and particularly the forthcoming episodes on The Nativity of our Lord. We have been assured that they will be presented with all the reverent beauty inherent in this event which ush- ered in the Christian era. The Nativity series will be heard over the network of the American Broadcasting System each Sunday at 6:30 p. m. (EST). We urge you to listen. In less than a year, “The Greatest Story Ever Told’ ’series has won world- wide acclaim for the searching and pro- vocative manner in which it brings the simple beauty of Christ’s teachings to tne people. Representing, in humble sincerity: a Association ins} plea for broader tolerance and under- standing, “The Greatest Story Ever Told” is a unique contribution to all creeds in all lands by a sponsor interested solely in a lasting peace through the betterment of mankind. In our opinion, there can be today no higher form of public service. Oklahoma man, convicted of stealing gas pipes, got three years in the jug. He should have confined his activities to war contracts, in which case he would have been eligible for parole in six months. LABOR DISPUTES The number of. strikes in October— 175—set a new low for 1947. Labor De- partment figures showed that 60,000 workers left their jobs during October be- cause of labor disputes, resulting in the loss of about 1,850,000 man-days of work. About 2,000,000 man-days were lost in September because of strikes. The De- partment said federal mediators settled 83 strikes in October and settled another 405 disputes before strikes were called.
