Advanced biology students of the Key West High School visit- ed the local water-culture farm operated by E. V. Kinsman and R. B. Pittman. There, Mr. Kins- man explained to the interest- ed students the facts about growing crops in solutions of fer- tilizer. The fourth crop to be in pro- duction was already being pick- ed, and most of the students en- just off the vine. The vines are fed three times a day, just like a person, only the food is pump- ed through the growing beds and then drained back intoa cis- !tern and used for storing it be- | tween meals. Special tame bees are used to | assure the vines producing a bumper crop—the bees don’t sting, and in addition, they make | cucumber. honey which tastes | just like any other honey. These cucumber vines pro-; duced the first ripe fruit just a little less than 7 weeks after being planted. The chemicals are adjudged at first to give better sprouting and rapid growth. Then after chemical tests show that certain minerals are being joyed fresh, luscious cucumbers | used faster, they are added in| greater amounts. In this way the plants have exactly the kind of foed they need most. This varies from time to time. After they i Start blooming some additional foods are given, and when the} fruit forms, more phosphorus must be given. Then, when the crop is over, by simply turning off the juice all plants and weeds are completely killed, so plowing and other cultivation methods are not needed. The students liked the cucum- bers so much, they asked for a list of the.stores in town which sell the Kinsman jumbo variety. Already sold on _ hydroponic foods by their study, and by the exceptional quality evident upon inspection; they were complete- ly convinced by free samples. Life. expectancy in 1944 was approximately 65 years.
