Now Eligible For Scholarships As a participant in the Bausch & Lomb Honorary Scie Award, program for recognition of high achievement in scien- tific subjects, Key West High School is eligible to submit a candidate for one of the five Bausch & Lomb Science Scholar- ships at the University of Roches- ter to be awarded in 1948. Each scholarship ha sa value of $1,500. ; The award medal is given each year in 4,800 schools throughout the United States to graduating high school students who win| the highest standing in science studies. The winner in each school is eligible to compete for one of the Bausch & Lomb Schol- arships. At present, theer are 18 holders of these scholarships studying physics, chemistry, Bi| ology, or other of the sciences at the University of Rochester, In May, 1948, about 20 win- ners of the Bausch & Lomb .hon- orary science award who will have completed their applications for the Bausch & Lomb science scholarships will be guests of the university and of Bausch & Lomb; Optical Co., for two days of tests | and interviews. From this group of finalists, the scholarship com- mittee of the University of Ro- chester will select the five win- ners of the 1948 Bausch & Lomb! Science Scholarships. Upon request, Horace O’Bry- ant, principal of Key West High School, will give interested stu- dents further details on the Bausch & Lomb _ Honorary Science Award. It is pointed out that great scientific and industrial achieve- ments that hastened the: conchu- sion of World War II have stim- ulated widespread interest in the} future of science and its peace-! time applications. Moreover, Dr. Vanevaar Bush, in his report, “Science, the Endless Frontier,” | states that the need for scientists is more than twice as great today as before the war. Many of the students at Key West High School} and elsewhere are aware of this need and of the challenge it of- fers inquiring minds, and are bringing to their science studies keen interest and enthusiasm. | The purpose of the Bausch &, Lomb Honorary Science Award! program is to interest mo: ented young students in the gr opportunities for service and ad- vancement that scientific careers} offer, as a means of helping the} nation to fill its need in that field. Approximately 500,000 people in the United States are estimat- ed to have active TB.
