Of the 100 rooms that are prop-, erly illuminated, not one was so equipped by either the state or the counties in which they are lo- cated, but by private individuals or. organizations, such as the P,-T. A., Jaycees, Lions clube and the like. Results of improper lighting in schools is very evident, Dr. Col- man said. Statistics show that when a child enters school in the elementary grades, five percent ha.e a! eyes which can be cor- rected. By the time these stu- dents reach high school, thirty percent have bad eyes and if they enter college approximately thir-, ty-five percent are wearing glasses. Florida possesses the record for. thé highest percent of blindness in the country, Dr. Colman stated. } “When it is taken into consid- eration that the enrollment xt the} schools in Florida constitut twenty-five percent of the popu lation of Florida,” Dr. Colman | continued, “poor lighting is going to play an important part in the; lives of our future citizens unless something is done now.” fl The Harris School is the best public school in Monroe coun- ty. Dr. Colman said. “But not ! one school in this area has prop- er lighting.” he added, “with the exception of the Division Street Elementary School. where two fixtures have been installed that are approved by the, National Education Asso- ciation. Dr. Colman, who is a native France, said that this country possesses the finest gifts in the world—gifts that are worth fight-' ing for to keep. These are free education and the right to wor- ship in the churches of the in- dividual’s choice.
