Formerly, the . voting place” in that preeinet was the High. School gymnasium. The gymnasium, was: not’. available this year, but’ the local scvol, board told the city. commission that the higle'schoo] annex -| could be ‘used for a ‘polling place. When the list of polling places for the entire city’ wag brought before. the com: mission for final action, Poinciana was. designated for the sixth pretinct., Louis Carbonell made a motion to amend missioner Hunter Harden seconded the tion, which was put to a vote. Demeritt, John Carbonell and Cooper | voted for Poinciana and Louis Carbonell and Har- den voted for the annex. What prompted the three commis- sioners to chose Poinciana over the annex? By far the larger number, of. voters in the precinct reside nearer the amnex.-Was the object of the three ‘commissioners, in put- ting the precintt’ so‘far away~from the bulk of the vote, to discouragé hundreds of voters from gding to the polls? Conversely, the three commissioners may say that, were the polls in the sehool annex, Poinciana voters wolld® be incon- venienced. But that is not the case, as prac- tically all Poinciana voters come to town daily on their way to work and pass through town on their way home, whereas the bulk of voters in the precinct has no reason to go to Poineiana daily. Well may THE ORACLE ask, “What’s Cooking?” If you can read, and do not read, you might as well not know how to read. voters? The published statement of a National © eomentetor that the United States and Russia are’ “snarling” at one another is an unfortunate view that cannot be ac- cepted. We have not “snarled” at Russia, and the United States has made every « human and honest effort to straighten out = disagreements between the two countries. s Ever since the first meeting of the vic- torious governments in World War II the miscalled Russian . “stateamen”* have “snarled” at everything that represented the principles of Democratic Government. The Russian government maintains un- civilied leaders with apparently nothing but brutal thoughts in mind. They have, ~ so far, defeated the aims and purposes of the United Nations. ~ The sooner we part with Russia, the better. There should be’ no regret express- ed by the Nations that are trying to do an honest job in World affairs. EES ay What Communists can’t stand is not seeing the poor, but seeing the rich. The modern world has its, counter- parts to the fakirs and medicine men of olden eras. THE ORIGIN OF “BRIDAL” Take. the society page of any news- paper, datly or weekly,-and you-will find that onetof the words most fréquently used is “bridal.” Consult any dictionary and you will learn, if you do not already know, that the word originally was bride-ale. It had its origin in ancient England when ale was the feature of almost every type of festival. Many of these festivals were for fund-raising purposes, such as tithe-ales, give-ales, and church-ales to facilitate the collection of parish dues and funds for needed repairs. The merriest of all of them was, of course, the bride-ale. The setting was as festive as possible. Presents filled tables and families and friends of the bridal couple mingled gaily in their holiday dress while the bride herself looked her very best as she poured ale for the guests. Modern wedding breakfasts and the custom of wedding presents are said to have originated with bride-ales. Beer and ale have for centuries been closely associated with pleasant events and; happy surroundings. And today, as in the past, beer and ale have their tradi- tional roles as the beverages of modera- tion, sociability and hospitality. Veterans who learned to live in fox holes can, no doubt, become accustomed to having no homes for their families. BUILDING VOLUME INCREASES In the first 9 months of 1947, construc- tion in place totaled more than $9 bil- lion, as compared with less than $7 bil- lion in 1946. The U. S. Commerce Department pre- dicts that the industry will produce an even greater volume of work than the $12 billion total now estimated for 1947. The mounting strength of the demand for construction in the face of the current price level has amazed those who had predicted a recession. in building. Leaders of the industry say that present prices will hold for some time, being bzased up- on wage rates and material costs which are relatively inflexible. Apparently any improvement must come from greater efficiency and tech- nical advances in the art, both of which jae long-term developments.
