MONOGRAPH To Those Affected: Few Partnerships last, because one of the partners wants more than his hon- est share, THE ORACLE. CC A Pt FOOD A WEAPON IN EUROPE The effort to organize the western na- tions of Europe, without the cooperation of Rufsia and: the satellite states, runs into one tremendous barrier. It should be remembered that Europe has never been self-supporting in food- stuffs in modern times. The western indus- trial nations wind themselves without food. Cut off from the farm production of the Danube Valley and Poland, they are un- able to import sufficient food from the Western Hemisphere without consider- able financial assistance from the United States. The dilemma of the western nations is that they must have food in order that la- bor can produce, Then, in order to secure food, the products of industry must be sold to build up credits for the purchase of agricultural products. Consequently, the main question is whether the United States will give sufficient assistance to make it possible for the western nations to become independent of the food-grow- ing countries now under Soviet domina- thon. » i 'i! This raises the question whether the United States will reduce its tariffs in or- der to permit industrial products from the western nations to come into the United States. If not, there is no way for these nations to secure dollar credits with which to purchase the products of American farms, The same question confronts South America, which is trying to industrialize itself, So, the problem confronting the Unit- ed States boils down to how far we are veady to go in preventing the Soviet from dominating Europe, Without assistance from this country, the western nations must seek an economic agreement with the eastern countries now divided by the iron curtain, or else be without food to sustain the people who must work in pro- ductive labor, Practical Religion: Giving a fair return for everything that we get out of life. Faith and patience are great assets and wonderful helps when you need them. The general public requires protection from: government, labor, business and pressure groups. PLE See The human race would be vastly im- proved if everybody lived according to sincere principles without stirring up bad feeling about differences in beliefs, BUSINESS CYCLES Fat years and lean years, business cycles forever revolving,—such are the ways of life. Economists have tried to determine the lengths of cycles, from good to poor or poor to good, but nobody knows how long a boom or a depression will last. Business in Key West is still fairly good, but an economist of note, Tom Tip- pett, educational director of the Interna- tional Association of Machinists, said, in an adaress on Labor Day, that recession already has set in, adding that, should in the grip of another depression. On the same day federal reserve sys- tem research experts issued a bulletin, in which it was stated that persénal savings will be far lower this year than the 1946 level. The experts declared that several million Americans, who had been able for several years to save money, are now un- able to do so because of the higher cost of living, while many others, who were not concerned in saving during the fat years, are now cashing securities to meet the higher prices for the necessities of life. Others are borrowing, or attempting to borrow. It has been said of Key West for many years that it is the last to feel an uptrend in business and the last to feel the effects of a depression. Private business locally is not as good as it was two or three years ago, but public business, in the city and the county, is better now than at any oth- er time. ; The city’s bank roll is still large and the county, including the school board, has more money now than it has ever had. How collection of taxes during the fiscal year, beginning October 1, will compare with the fiscal year about to end, only time can tell, though the outlook is re- ported to be good, with the coming winter full of promise for the city’s best tourist season. As a mere man may we not record our approbation of the movement reportedly of long skirts TO BREAK UP MONOPOLY The activity of the Department of Justice in instituting suits charging con- spiracies to monopolize various phases of production, represents a program “aimed at breaking up monopolistic power in in- dustry,” declares Attorney General Tom C. Clark. Mr. Clark is carrying out the work of Thurman Arnold, Wendell Berge and oth- ers who previously headed the anti-trust division of his Department. He recognizes, no doubt, the imperative necessity, of mak- ing American capitalism competitive as well as the vehicle for free enterprise and private initiative. The concentration of industrial, fi- nancial and business control in the United States represents a serious barrier to the opportunities of individuals. If there is ‘to be anything Jike a free economy, the indi- vidual American must have the privilege of engaging in any lawful business enter- prise. This right can be denied, and has been denied, by monopolistic conspiracies to stifle competition. The little man requires protection from big business just as much as he requires it from governmental regimentation. Classified advertisements in The Citi- zen cost very little but often bring in un- expected returns in dollars. ———E INDIA FACES TROUBLE The process of fixing (the boundaries between the new dominions of India and Pakistan has caused new divisions to arise Already, there is in progress the trek of minorities, from one area to another, and there cecurs ominous talk of “hostages” and “territorial murder” in connection with the delineation of frontiers and the trans- fer of minorities. The New York Times says it has “be- come clear that religious bias now affects the police service” and it has been appar- ent that the army will be divided between the dominions upon the basis of religion. This creates difficulties in connection with restoring and maintaining order. The size of the job that confronts the leaders of India can be apprehended when one recalls that tens of thousands of peo- ple have been killed and millions of dol- lars worth of property destroyed in the past year in that poor and backward land. wages decrease, the United States will be ; organized in Texas to prevent the return | between the peoples of that unhappy area. | | day through Friday.
