Having lived on an _ island: known as Isle of Pines, Cuba, for | 35 years where parades are un- | known, yours was doubly appre- | ciated by my husband and me,} who aré spending two months va- | cation in wonderful Key West. The. floats repreesnted a lot of | work. and originality. My hat off. to them all. Glad I am not one of the judges | to award the one hundred dollars | we noted in your paper wa sto be awarded. n Thanks, Key West, for the pleas- | ure and treat granted us on Labor | Day. In fact, all the days we plan’ to spend here. MRS. E. J. PEARCY. Key West, Fla., 429 Caroline Street,, Sept. 2, 1947. TO CORRECT INJUSTICES | Editor, The Citizen: To correct certain injustices that Louis Carbonell omitted of what actually transpired in the meeting he had with the com- mittee that met with him Friday night, I wish to add these cor- rections: We approached Mr. Carbonell | in regard to his sudden shift in his avowed beliefs in regards to the Navy acquiring Poinciana Project and what changed his mind. He stated that conditions | were much different now than at the time he went to Washington to champion our cause. We then asked him what was so different now that was not then true. He mumbled over his steak without giving any answer! Then we asked him what would happen to all those non-Navy and enlisted families. ‘None of us are foolish enough | to believe that the Navy will. permit anyone but officer per- sonnel to remain in the projec. And here in an aside I would like . ta ask the Navy, and I served | four years in that organization beth in Key West and overseas, | at what time did the Navy: change its policies to permit en- listed personnel to live with the officer personnel and their fam- ilies? We then asked him what would | happen to the displaced families, and he stated that that was no coneern of his! I am of the belief that the plight of the citizens of | ary community is very much the | concern of a public official, put , in: office to be their spokesman. And if we disregard the plight of, the families that cannot pay the high rent of the military be- catise we are not subsidized from $99 to $120 by the government, | although we work for that same government, there is the other important angle of taxes. Key West will lose forever $30,000 in taxes annually. Of course, Louis Carbonell will shrug this off as insignificant, as we were informed by him that he: had no worries, he had enough money to last him 25 years if he never .worked again! A_ very noble ; :thing to say to people, worried ‘about losing their homes. — All in all, we are very much disappointed in Louis, as we really thought, at one time, that he was sincere in his desire to alg the people of Key West. Respectfully, R. M. SICILIANO. Key West, Fla., Sept. 2, 1947. P.S.—In justice to the Navy’s | attitude, no one would refuse to | use every possible legitimate } trick to get a $1,500.000 gift. We | all know that the Navy’s strategic development of its various bases has nothing to do with receiving or not receiving these gifts. Every Little Helps | A tramp approached a group | of churchmen and asked for aid. “No,” one of them told him. ‘I'm afraid we can’t help you; but you see that big man over there?”—pointing to a bishop— = “he’s a very generous man; you might try him.” The tramp approached the bishop confidently. The others, watched with interest. They saw a surprised look come over the tramp’s face; the bishop was talk- ing eagerly. The tramp looked troubled. Then something passed from hand to hand, and the tramp slunk away. One of the church- men called to him and asked: | “Well did you .@et something from our bishop?” The tramp gave a sickly grin. | “No,” he said. “I gave him half a dollar for his new cathedral!” ‘A.
