BUNGLE, BUNGLE, BUNGLE Key West realtors have nothing to fear over-the indictment by a grand jury Wednesday, in Washington, of the Na- tional Association of Real Estate Boards and the Washington Real Estate Board on charges of conspiring to fix commission rates, ranging from 25 to 50 per cent. Miami realtors, through their officers, hit back hard at the charge. President of the Miami board characterized the charge as ridiculous, and the president of the Mi- ami Beach Board said: “Blame for the high cost of homes and the bumbling building program may more properly be charged to the foolhardy re- strictions imposed by incompetent admin- istrators during the war.” Undoubtedly there is a great deal of truth in that statement. Let us consider the condemnation by the government of real estate in Key West during the early days of the war. Whom did the federal govern- ment send here for the appraisal of real estate in Key West? Appraisers from in Key West than they did about values in Timbuctu. They came here in 1941, when the as- sessment of real estate was at a low ebb. The assessment of the entire county was only $2,400,000. A similar condition pre- In this county the assessment was about one-tenth of full value, and in many coun- ties it was lower than that. But in all counties the assessment was greatly increased as a result of the 1945 law which fixed a 100 per cent valuation. In Monroe the assessment now is more than $22,000,000 as compared with $2,- 400,000 in 1941. All the so-called Chicago appraisers did was to learn the assessment of a piece of property and use that for the amount of appraisal. Many residents lost their shomes and business properties for only a tithe of what they were worth. Bureaucrats, working out of Washing- ton, bungle because they are not familiar with local conditions. But bungle, bungle, bungle, is part and parcel of bureaucrats. BOY DIES WITH HIS FATHER In many areas of the United ‘States, especiaily in the rural sections, the people depend largely upon surface wells for their wafer supply. As for local realtors, they operate now under the.same conditions as they have done, so far as commissions are concerned, since their organization. WOULD FIRE AT PLANES Low-flying airplanes have aroused the ire of C. J. Carey, of Sacramento, Califor- nia, who is especially incensed agains’ high-powered microphones. Unlike most citizens, Mr. Carey plans some action against the “nuisance.” He re- quested the city council to grant him au- thority to mount a 50-MM. anti- -aircraft gun in his backyard and to grant him im- nunity if he should hit his target, the low- ‘lying airplanes, The pub- } Words have di different ears—so be careful how you use them.
