The machine now be- ! ing used by the Navy against the | mosquito menace here belongs to the Overseas Road and Toll Bridge Commission and must be moved from Key West shortly. Prior to the commission meet- ing, Commissioner Louis Car- bonell obtained assurance from the county commission that the county will supply the truck and labor necessary for operating the sprayer. The Navy, City Manager O. J. S. Ellingson said, will sup- ply the DDT solution to be sprayed. “The device is to be purchased by the city at a cost of about $1,750 delivered,” said Carbonell. « “We will have the help of the Navy in the supply of DDT and oil to spray the island, but we need the assistance of the coun- ty’s truck. “It would not take the truck long to spray the entire island of Key West. Then the county could take the device to any spot it selects to carry on the work.” County Commissioner Clar- ence Higgs moved that permis- sion be granted and the county furnish the truck. The motion was carried unanimously. The Jaycees proposed pur- chase of the machine by letter to City Manager O. J. S. Elling- son. It was then decided to have Commissioner Carbonell contact the county commission and re- port back. After reporting the favorable” response of the County Commis- sion, Carbonell. proposed pur- chasing the apparatus on the in- stallment plan, rather than amend the budget. Ellingson said that installment purchases often cost high interest payments. The city manager was author- ized to investigate the best pur- chase plan and have an ordinance drawn up providing for the pur- chase. Representing the Jaycees at the meeting was Duward Tyus, committee chairman on the sub- ject. Tyus thanked the Commis- 1 sion for its prompt action. The machine is sold by FOG, Inc., of Tallahassee, distributors for the Todd Shipyards Corpora- tion of New York. The apparatus ig called TIFA for Todd Insecti- cidal Fog Applicator. It can be used not only for killing insects but fungi and weeds. It is useful to destroy flies around city dumps or sewer areas and to purify hospital grounds. During the 1946 polio epidemic San Antonio, Texas, sprayed the entire city with Fog. The name derives from the manner in which the insecticide, heated to a red-hot temperature, emerges from the sprayer in a fog-like manner, thoroughly impregnating the area in clouds of DDT. ————. SPECIFICATIONS FOR (Continued from Page One) in the specifications regarding it,” said Capt. Spalding. Capt. Spalding added that an- other important factor was still} pending—title to the Martello Tower property—had not been settled yet. Chairman Bentley said the’ commission may get title to the property from the War Assets Administration almost any time now. “The WAA had an engineer down here last week estimating the cost of the beach property,” said Bentley. “We don’t know what his estimate is, but we don't think it will be large.” Bentley said he would call aj“ special meeting of the commis- sion to consider the beach pro- posal as soon as the county re- ceived word from the WAA or the Navy regarding the sand. Spalding said the contractors should have at least 20 days in which to study the plans for the beach and to sub- mit estimates, not guesses, as to the costs involved “It would be better for the county and, naturally, would be better for the contractors,” con- cluded Spalding. The city commission designated August 22 at 8 p.m. as the time for a public hearing on the case. Allan Mears, who seeks a Busi ness B zoning for his corner at Florida and Virginia streets made a similar application.
