THE ORACLE. “DANGEROUS FOR ME” A sub-committee of the House of Rep- resentatives, investigatiiig the causes of rising food prices and labor racketeering, recently heard the head of» a truckers’ anion, in the ‘City of New York, admit The union leAder, Joseph G. Papa, frankly told the committee, “I think it’s dangerous for me to have that muth pow- ev,” but added that he had not put any place out of business in the past and would not do so in the future. In this statement he was supported by several business men who had contracts with the union, Mr. Papa also asserted that his. union did not force membership on farmers who trucked their produce into the New York ‘a, This is an interesting statement which, we presume, is true so far as his union is concerned. However, there have been complaints by farmers, from other tates, as to the practices of unions in New York, in that they were forced to hire union drivers to operate their trucks, or else pay union dues to do so themselves. EUROPE’S ECONOMIC DIVISION If thé nations of Europe, under the leadership of Great Britain and France, o*ganize in accordance with the plan pro- posed by Secretary of State Marshall, the probability is that the Continent will be divided into economic areas, one dominat- ed by Russia and the other practicing something’ of a free economy. It will cost the United States consider- ible money, in the way of advanced loans, to give the Western European nations an opportunity to set up their shops. How- ever, if the investment proves successful, increasing productive capacity of the area affected and improving the standard of living of the people, the area itself will- create a large barrier to Russian expan- sion. It is even considered likely by some ob- servers that the successful development of Murepe, even if it costs considerable money, will de much to prevent a more costly war and would, therefore, be-a good investment. ee ee Stout Makes some people stout. ecient The trouble with most conversation is too much of it. Devastation follows in its wake in some parts of the ‘world and ‘in other parts abundance is provided. The “red tide” or poison water, which has killed sponge and fish in the waters of the Florida Keys, is killing millions of fish along Florida’s west coast, aceord- ing to reports from Venice, Florida. State and federal agencies, engaged in conservation work, are studying the re- currence of the “red tide.” Dr, Clyde T. Reed; biologist, stationed in ‘Tampa, said he believed that tiny organisms, which turn the water red, attach themselves to the gills of fish and stop their breathing. As a “red tide” occurs periodically in Florida waters, so a “red tide” appedrs every summer in the waters of Iceland. But the Iceland “red tide” is worth millions of dollars to the people of that country. The tide is composed of billions of tiny ted crabs, favorite food for herring. -As soon as.the crabs begin to appear, schools of ‘herring, each school comprising count less thousands, crowd into ,the Icelandic waters. It has been reported that herring reach such vast numbers, as they feed on the red crabs, the surface swimmers are frequently forced above the water. Each boat makes but a single haul to fill its hold. The catch of herring each season is worth several million déllars to the Ice- landers. So Nature works, strikes down here, lifts up there; rains too much here: and not enough there; floods ‘destroy crops in some parts of the world, and in other parts they are destroyed by droughts. West coast scientists, who are study- ing the “red tide,” said that it struck heavily last November and again in April of this year. It was reported in a limited degree in the waters of the Florida Keys in April, and some persons. thought the poison came out of the Everglades. But where it comes from and what is its rause nobody knows. Nature keeps many of her secrets from us. Sixty passenger bus companies operat- ing in Florida have been. notified that the Florida Railroad and-Public Utilities Commission will meet in Tallahassee Oc- tober 7, to hear their rebuttal to commis- sion charges of over-crowding, unsatis- factory terminals, failure to keep sched- uies and other camplaints. ___-_ FOOD IS IMPORTANT There are millions of people in the United States who pay more attention to the feeding of poultry and livestock than they do the food their children consume. Undoubtedly, some of these people re- side in Monroe county. For ohe reason or another, including lack of information and sometimes lack of money,. children grow up undernourished and ill-fed, with their weakened bodies inviting disease. If they escape death, their bodies and general health will present- living: testimony for years to come of the ignorance of their parents in regard to food. : Every family diet should include milk, meat, bread, vegetables and fruits. Every housewife who reads this article should check up on the meals served to her fam- ily during the past week. What the food- fixer should ask is, “Was the nutritive material properly divided into protein, fats, carbohydrates and mineral matter? Was the food properly prepared in palat- able form? Did it have variety? Was it sound from a health standpoint, taking in- to consideration the needs of the various members of the family?” The acme of ignorance is to accept the opinions of others, without question, but the opinionated persons is generally: half- baked and usually a bore. 7 sues skis. oom NO EXCUSE There is not much excuse to be.made for the Temessee man who “disappear- ed” and permitted police and volunteers | to spend a full week, searching a water- | filled cave, for his remains.
