Seven million taxpayers, he add- ed, received returns from Uncle Sam. Snyder stressed the accelera- tion with which the treasury sent back the money to the seven million. He said he reaffirmed the President’s opposition to cutting income taxes at this time. He fa- vored, instead, reducing the pub- lic debt. He explained that when the time is opportune to cut taxes, the cuts should be confined to taxpayers paying in the lower; brackets. Truman, un- wittingly, put thousands of dollars into the pockets of hundreds of Key Westers last night. As his car passed along Di- vision and Duval streets, and bolita players saw that the ending number of the license plate was 45, they rushed to the bolita houses to buy the number. Later, when the 2l-gun sa- lute began to ‘sound, there was another rush to bolita houses to play thar number. Both numbers were play- ed “across the board,” that is, to be among the three end- ing numbers drawn. Results: Twenty-one was the first prize and 45, the third prize. Open Monday thru Saturday Poinciana Bus Passes Door Went To Beach; Tells Mayor’ This Is His “Fav- orite Vacation Spot” By JOHN R. VOSBURGH City Editor, The Key West Citizen President Truman has received from 20 to 30 telegrams at the temporary White House here ex- pressing “an extremely favor- able” reaction to his message to Congress yesterday asking $400,000,000 for aid to Greece and Turkey, Presidential Press Secretary Charles G. Ross said this morning. he number of telegrams sent to Mr. Truman in Key West is especially worthy of note, Ross remarked, since the President rarely receives an expression of opinion on such a_ scale when away from Washington. Hun- dreds of telegrams were reported received at the Capitol. The President went to bed about 11:30 o'clock last night in the temporary White House at the picturesque West Indian villa of the Naval Base commandant, Capt. Henry M. Cooper, after listening to an 11 p. *m. broad- cast. He slept until 8 o'clock this morning, an, wnusually late hour for him. Mr. Truman usually rises as mueh as two hours earlier but is following his intention of taking a good rest here. The President's breakfast sisted of scrambled’ eggs and. duexed jand a brown, checked sports shirt. About 10:15 he walked down to the small beach on the Submarine base, where he sun- ned himself and took a brief swim. President's Yacht Arrives The presidential yacht, USS ; Williamsburg, arrived at 7 a. m. today at the Base from Guan- tanamo Bay, much to the grati- fication of the presidential party, who had stored considerable bag- gage aboard in preparation for the Caribbean Sea trip which {the President was to have taken but which was canceled last week. | Ross said Mr. Truman has no | plans to go aboard the yacht and had no definite plans as to what he would do this afternoon. The | President, would do some fishing during his stay, in all probability, | the press secretary said. Mr. Truman intends to remain here until Sunday night or Monday. Ross said that the President's personal physician, Brig. Gen. Wallace Graham, is not in the presidential party. The General's absence ought to prove, the sec- retary added, that Mr. Truman is not a sick man as has been re- ported in some places. Such re- ports are greatly exaggerated, Ross explained. | “The President is merely in need of,a_ rest. He is in good ‘health and does not even have ja cold,” Ross concluded. The p secretary said that the President and the entire | White House were naturally | greatly pleased with the latest Gallup poll ports showing a | shift in political sentiment to a 51-49 margin in favor of the Democrats. Mr. Truman was smiling broad- ly as he stepped from his pri- vate plane, “The Sacred Cow,” jat 6:50 p. m., yesterday at Boca Chica.
