et No. 61 VOLUME LXVIII. Commission Delays SOUTHERNMOST NEWSPAPER Action On Selection 'x. Of Site For A Beach) DEFERRED ACTION UN-& TIL APRIL 1; HEARD: CITIZENS AT MEETING LAST NIGHT After hearing arguments for and against the immediate selec- tion of a beach site, Monroe County Commission voted last night: to defer final action until the next regular session, April 1.| It was felt that the commission had not given full consideration | to the Stock Island and the Boulevard sites, while it was shown the Martello Tower site had been carefully studied. H Frank Bentley, chairman of the commission, saying he was op- posed to further delay, in the selection of a beach site, was the only member of the commission to vote against the resolution to defer action. Commissioner Gerald Saun- ders, chairman of the committee of the commission directed to study the question, said he voted “feluctantly” for the resolution. The resolution was. offered by Commissioner Clarence Higgs, and firm “yeas” were received from Commissioners W. A. Par- rish and Eduardo Gomez. For upwards of two hours last night the commission heard ar- guments from various citizens. The majority felt that the com- mission would be acting unwisely if it selected the site of the beach at the time. “It would not hurt to wait an- other week at least,” Clem C. Price, president of the Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the Rotary Club’s Beach committee, said. “Selection of a beach site’ for Key West, and I understand you fayor the Martella site, would, be + Rect thing that ever Hap- peried to the city,” the Rev. J. C. Velton, pastor of the First Bap-| tist Church, said, “The Pastor Group of Key West is all for the selection of the beach site now.” Rogelio Gomméz, urged the com- mission to select the site above Bertha street and at the same time acquire part of the Mea- eham Field Airport. “The ~government has_ spent $300,000 on Meacham Field and no effort should be overlooked to acquire that property,” Gomez said, Mayor W. W. Demeritt appear- ed also in favor of the Boulevard site. He said he knew personally that there was never any beach at Martello Tower, and that the beaeh at Boulevard site had been of a fine nature until de- stroyed by construction of the boulevard breakwater. He urged a beach for the negro residents of the city. He added that there was plenty of room on other parts of the island for a negro bathing beach. “Further, if you take 500 or 600 feet of Rest Beach to make | Martello site ,stand up, then you're offending the man who purchased Rest Beach and are blocking his plans to build a fine hotel there,” Demeritt said. If Greece and atte BE to survive as free states, he declar- ed, then they must be helped by. the United States, which is the only country in the world able to assist them in continuing a democratic form of government. Great Britain, Truman stated, has been helping Greece and Turkey but, because of- economic stress in Great Britain she is not able to render further assistance. She has announced that she will discontinue her aid to Greece on March 31, and while the plight} of that country could be taken care of by the United Nations, that procedure would be too lengthy, because Greece needs immediate assistance. He called} ditions in that country hav on congress to render. that as- sistance, else Greece will be plunged into chaos.
