AGE FOUR SE Seema PEOPLE’S FORUM welcomes expres- of its read- ef the views bet the editor eoceven ee EXPLANATORY Editor, The Citizen: It is nothing short of amazing that anyone reading the well- intentioned story of the New Year celebration at the La Con- cha, could attribute to it a de- sire on the part of this writer to slur Key West and drive the tourists away! P. B. Roberts’ communication re: My article was highly amus- ing to me, falling as it does so far to the left. I felt, too, that Miss Grace Wynn’s delightful vindication of me _ required no} further brief on my part. Unfor- { tunately, criticism of that type can do a lot of harm as evinced in the letter of the good people in the January 6th issue, who apparently go beyond a fancied slur of their good city and inject a racial difference into the sit- uation. To them I would sa ae is by no means my f s to Key West, but the third since 1940, If I did not like it and the| people here, I would not have} come back after the first time. And liking it, would I want to slam it, to others? That just doesn’t make sense, now does it? I have a number of delightful | Cuban friends here who can see nothing wrong in the story. I just | wonder who put that idea into your heads .. .” I would suggest that you care- fully read the story again. If you dre really proud of your contribution to Key West, you will regard it as a compliment! to you, and the description. of | your celebration of the first | peaceful New Year in typical; Cuban fashion, as a well deserv- ed opportunity after years of war-time restriction. Whether the dancing at the La Concha was a credit to you or not is something you must decide for -yourselves. Your audience will not judge you by my story, but by what they saw them- selves. : Personally I enjoyed it im-| mensely. I never laughed soj much in my life. As to you, who are making such a time about} nothing, I would like to ask:! “Was you there, Charlie? If you | weren't, Charlie, you ain’t seen nothing yet!” F, HELEN MacLEAN. Jan. 7, 1947. DEFENDS DOHERTY | Editor, The Citizen: I have never written to your, People’s Forum before, but feel I! must answer Mr. Joseph Sirugo’s letter of January 6th in regards! to Rev. Doherty. Mr. Sirugo, 1} differ with you as to Rev. Doh ty’s interest in the communit: any man fighting for a clean city | in which to rear our children is to be commended, not condemned 1.—Liquor is not an industry, but rather a damnation to those who are affected by it. Il.—You stated that beer, and liquor are sold by bootleggers and unscrupulous dealers. If you know all of this, why don’t you go to the law? I1I.—Many tourist have left our fair city because of liquor dives. especially on our main stree' God help us if we have to run our city on revenue from these places. IV.—By your you are ready to fight even the will of the people. Iam sure Rev. Doherty would be glad to abide by the will of the people, as the people elected four out of five of the commisioners who promised to uphold the Sunday closing law V.—You said God tells us to love our neighbor, not fight him. God also says woe unto him who puts the cup to his neighbors lips, so beware. VI.—Mr. Sirugo, I am afraid you are in error about Ordinance 19. Read Tuesday, January 7th’s Citizen, President Truman says the war isn’t over, just the emerg- ency About bringing the ques- tion to the representatives of the people and let them decide, I agree with you in that and, furthrmore, I believe in bringing it before the people in a lqcal option election. In my opinion, Rev. Doherty has been using his better judg- ment by advocating the morality, and the integrity of the y, and the principles of We are proud of a who is not a sobriety commur Jesus C minister up for his principles; God give us more » him, plenty more. Mr. § go, I am afraid you are helping to keep people out of eAss8 | tourist's ambition ‘when he visits ing to feed the daily bread depends upon the tourist, because Key West is not jan industrial city. Sincerely yours, MRS. MYRTLE BOWERY. (A full-fledged Key West Conch) Key West, Fla., Jan. 9, 1947, PINKS DOHERTY Editor, The Citizen; I quote Rev. Doherty (a min- ister of the Lord): “We'll give them the best fight they ever had.” I also quote Mr. Sirugo: “We are just trying to establish what we had before the war.” Rev. Doherty, did you know that while America was at war more than two-thirds of Amer- ica’s bars were open on Sunday? You know the ordinance as well as I do, To refresh every- one’s memory it is No, 19. Now, tell me do you like to see things on the up and up or behind a person’s back? I am wholeheartedly in favor of Mr. Sirugo when he says to make Key West a_ thriving tourist town. Tell me, Reverend, what is a a place of leisure? It isn’t, most cettainly, to go to church, but to enjoy the pleasures he will find; in the resort of his choice. Reverend, your church isn’t go- but I would like to see Key West get somewhere, instead of talking about the past. Most Reverently Yours, An Ex-G.l., Whose Fighting Days Are Over (I Hope).
