Dated December 7th, it read: “Bill amd Helen Spall of good luck, The missus of course caught the first fish, We had a wonderful time.” Captain Trevor says they brought in fourteen yellowjacks and two barracuda. Too rough out on the reef and stream, they could only fish the channels. Old timer Captain John Spen- eer, a Key West fishing guide for twenty five years years, said Monday evening that, weather permitting, he’d be at the old Gulf fishing pier Tuesday, raring to start a new season as Captain of the “Rainbow”, owned by well known Alton “Ikey” Park. The “Rainbow” nas been lying in Garrison Bight, waiting for the season. Captain Spencer. was skipper and owner of the “Mary Anne”, operating from 1929 to 1940. But it might not be wise “Exactly how heavy are you, Ruppert?” asked The Citizen’s en- quiring waterfront reporter, over a cup of his famous coffee. “Oh, a trifle under four hun- dred pounds,” Ruppert drawled in a delightful imitation of a Cockney accent. Captain McCloud of the “Grey- hound”, sitting at the counter with the reporter grinned. Mis- chief lurked in his eyes. “T've of- ten wondered,” he remarked earelessly, “How Ruppert gets himself fitted into a seat at the} movies.” Ruppert cocked an ear. The re- porter stirred. “Does he use a shoe horn?”) continued McCloud, “Or does he | simply sit on the arms of the chair and allow himself to jell slowly into the seat?” Big Ruppert looked up sharply. His huge frame tensed. McCloud braced himself at the counter, ready to, duck. The reporter left. | Mr. and Mrs. N. L. Towle of | Chicago, and Mr. and Mrs. G, B. Hattersley of Philadelphia were smiling when they returned with Captain Ted Canova on the “Switchtail” Monday evening, and the fish box was opened at the pier. One by one, twenty two splen- did Crevalle jacks and a fifty- pound jewfish were tossed up on the dock. That was the only part of the day's catch, they de- clared. Many others had been caught and released at sea. Too rough on the outside that | ‘day, they had fished the quieter channel waters. It was their) third straight day of fishing on the “Switchtail”, and the best day, they all agreed. Asked if they had been out! with Ted Canova before, Mrs. Hattersley replied: “Oh, yes. Often, In fact, back in 1939, my husband caught a seven and a half foot sailfish with Ted.” All four are guests of the La Concha hotel.
