VOLUME LXVIL Ice Plant Explosion NO, 295 Causes 15 Deaths, 24 Injuries In New York BRICK AND CONCRETE® FROM PLANT DEMOL- ISH REAR OF TENE-| MENT pa (By Associated Press) NEW YORK, Dec. 12—Fifteen were killed and 24 injured early this morning by an exlosion in the Knickerbocker Ice Company’s | plant on West 184th street. Brick and concrete were hurl- ed from the piant to the. rear! walls of a tenament and demol- ished them. Firemen and others are still clearing away tons of debris, searching for other bodies. The explosion is thought to have been caused by escaping am- monia fumes that became ignited. Twenty-seven families, totaling almost 100 persons, were in the tenement at the time of the blast. Mest of those who occupied apartments in the rear of the building were trapped by cutting off passage ways to the front of the structures. Others are be- lieved to have been killed while still asleep, as only a few sec- ends passed between the terrific | roar of the explosion and the col- | lapse of the rear of the tenement. Disarmament (By The Associated Press) FLUSHING MEADOWS, Dec. 12.—British delegates argued to- day that the success of economic improvement throughout the world depends greatly on the ex- tent of the proposed disarma- ment program. For that reason, they stated, Great Britain favors calling a dis- armament conference within the next six months. With a reduc- tion of arms and armament, they contended, all countries, particu- larly those whose treasuries were drained by the war, will be in a position to improve their indus- trial production and thereby pro- mote their economic well-being. The Big Four were scheduled to hold their last meeting today, beginning at 4 o'clock ,till next March 10 when they will assem- ble in Moscow to discuss the pro- posed Romanian and Bulgarian treaties.
