MONOGRAPHS Whom Is Concerns: To be called a genius is net a comp !i mentary term, for a genius suffers from a form, more or less, of dementia. Neverthe- leas, to be a genius you must have an abundance of brains. So don't be]! alarmed. Yours, THE ORACLE. NOT ENCOURAGING A few days ago The Citi- zen reported that there were | 27 more applications for! marriage licenses filed in| Monroe County during Sep- tember than the number of} sults instituted for divorce. ' Por September the score was| like this; Marriage appli-| cations, 58; suits for divorce, | Sl As far as the Holy state of matrimony is concerned} there is nothing encouraging | ahout these figures. They} would have shocked grandpa and grandma into a lather @f condemnation and brought screaming protests | from more than one pulpit. | Today, however, mount- ing figures attract little at- tention, and in some quar-} ters it is taken for granted| that a divorce will follow af- ter the marriage becomes a little stale. Whether or not liberaliz- ed divorce laws are a good or a bad thing we do not pretend to know. That is a etatter for sociologists, not religionists, or reformers, or editors. But we do know this: That the home and the fireside is the basis for all enecessful governments, and any threat to the institution of marriage and the family is a threat to the stability of the government. Once the institution of marriage is weakened, the family is weakened, and in turn the state. It is a slow, imeiduous development, but that has never failed to one leave great havoc in its wake. Many high schools throughout the nation today are giving courses in mar- riage and family relations. © aren't sure, but we have a suspicion that it is a more valuable course than one that explains all about Han- nibal crossing the Alps, or the Norman invasion of Britain. ew Cigars, tobacco, beer and aleohol shorten lives, doc- tors tell us. So does over- eating, lack of rest and con- tinuous strain. If you have all these “assets,”’ you'd bet- ter slow up and take stock of your spiritual growth. PROGRESS FOLLOWS ROADS When Key West was. in the throes of a ripsnorting campaign almost a quarter ofa century ago, as "to whether or nota road should be built to the main- land, The Citizen published many a page of propaganda from the side “that favored ‘the proposed road and the side that opposed it. Several times, during the eampaign, proponents and opponents nipped one an- other, and by the time elec- tion day rolled around, tén- sion had reached ‘a high pitch. *But of all of the tens of “ch | thousands of words used in favoring and opposing the proposition, seven words, uttered by T. T. Thompson, who favored the construc tion of a road to the main- land, epitomied ‘the argu- ment. Thompson was quoted in a page advertisement, signed by T. Jenkins Curry, in The Citizen. “Roads don’t follow prog- ress; progress follows roads.” : Using that truth as a basis of his argument, Curry cited illustration after illus- tration to demonstrate the soundness. and logie of | Thompson’s statement. That statement is as true today as it was when used in the advertisement. Many Key Westers who. bought lots at $9 apiece at Big Coppitt have stated that they wish to build on the lois but have deferred doing so until roads are built to make the lots accessable. Now comes J. Frank Rob- erts to point out that a build- ing boom would occur on the lower Florida Keys if the county constructed lat- eral roads. leading to the | Overseas Highway. And he |and Thompson are right: | Progress will follow such | roads. The best way to be care- ful on the ‘highway is to drive in daylight, drive slow- ly and do nothing else at the time. The person who goes out of his way to make enemies for the sadistic joy of it, will wind up having only en- emies and no friends. it is the part of wis- dom, in all walks of life, to treat your enemies as if they will some day be your friends, and _ contrariwise treat your friends as if they will some day be your ene- mies. DOUBTFUL DEFENSE A prominent citizen of another state, being tried on a charge of murdering his wife, seems to rest his de- fense upon the testimony of friends, doctors and _ psy- chiatrists that he had an “alcoholic phychosis,” was incapable of deliberating and executing a murder and lacks the ability to distin- guish right from wrong. This raises an interesting point in connection with the trial of individuals accused of criminal acts. Should a defendant be acquitted on the ground that he delib- erately placed himself in such a condition which might make him a danger- ous member of society? Without knowing all of the facts connected with the case, it looks. as if the de- fendant’s attorneys are try- ing to save his life by con- vineing a jury that he did not know what he was do- ing. Testimony along this line came from relatives but | it is worth noting that if his condition was as described, his relatives should have had him committed to an institu- tion before. he killed his wife. If individuals become al- coholic addicts or ‘dope fiends, incapable to know- ing right from wrong, it would seem to be the duty of relatives to take some ac- tion to safeguard the pub- lie before the individual commits a serious crime. It is too late, after a murder has been committed, to come forward with such testimony as a defense. Dead ‘Game Sport The teacher was testing the class. Slapping a half-dollar on the desk, she said sharply: “What is that?” “Tails!” LEGALS NOTICE OF ELECTION : e Sheriff of Monroe County, State of Florida: Be it known that I, apa | of State of the State of ‘Florida, do hereby give notice that a GENERAL ELECTION ‘will be held in Monroe County, State of Florida, succeeding the first Monday in N row said, Te ‘knowledge of the kindergarten I THE KEY WEST CITIZEN ee Today’s ‘Anniversaries _ (Know America) 1746—(200 years ago) William Billings, self-taught Boston sing- ‘ing-master atid composer of hymn | tunes, Revolutionary patriot, pio- Instantly a voice from the back!
