As Key Westers recall, after! the 6 o’clock advisory, hurricane} warnings were ordered up from’ Key Largo to Fort Myers, and the report said the center of the} hurricane would pass through ; the Florida Straits. SESE SSa LS 4 Hurricane Not To Strike Key West Coast Guard authorities stated this morning that their orders now read “under Con- dition 2” from “Condition 1”, which means that the hurri- cane is in the vicinity. Con- dition 1 would indicate that the hurricane -is headed straight for Key West. Since Coast Guard orders now read “Condition 2” this indicates the hurricane will - not strike Key West. The authorities further stat- ed that “barring a sudden change in direction”, ory heavy winds would result from the tropical disturbance, which, at 10:20 this morning was in the vicinity of Dry Tortugas, 60 miles west of Key West. Smith, |chairman of the Florida Indus- trial Commission, reported. Throughout the state payments dropped from $104,451.50 for the previous week to $77,821.50. The number of claimants compen- sated dropped from 5,673 to 4,754, of whom 2,599 were men and 2,- 155 women. Compensation was paid in this county to persons classified as: Baggageman, one male; waitress- es, two females; skilled cigar | worker, one female; welders, one ‘female and truck driver, one male. . Roberts declared that, even with the slight movement of the | center toward the northeast, the storm would not pass through | the straits, but, instead, at a point west of Key West, probably | shortly west of Dry Tortugas, ; which lies 60 miles west and six’ miles north of Key West. But the Miami Weather Bu-| reau stuck to the Florida Straits! report until the advisory issued | at 7 o'clock this morning when' it was said that the center of the hurricane would strike the west coast of Florida somewhere be- tween Fort Myers and Tampa. As the crow flies, Fort Myers lies 160 miles north of Key West, and Tampa’ 260 -miles .to the north. This morning the Key West | Weather Bureau reported that, | when the wind veered to the southeast, it indicated that the! center of the hurricane would not strike Key West. Capt.
