MONOGRAPHS Dear Commissioners: Is it true you are not going to consider Dave King’stapphication’ for city manager be the majority ety eapla’ of Key rapsiletiahe want ye Yours, THE ORACLE Hon, City Commissioners Key West, Florida TIME TO ADVANCE While Key West would benefit greatly from a few substantial industries, such as a seafood canning factory and one for the making of} sea shell novelties, it cannot be denied that its greatest asset is its gorgeous climate —unequaled, perhaps, in all America: _ It is a sad fact, and one well known, that too many northerners hold to an er- roneous. belief that Key} West is a blazing inferno frequently lashed by devas-' tating hurricanes. Instead) of visualizing Key West as it| is—a beautiful palm-stud-! ded city with a healthy and) equable climate—they pic-! ture ‘it as a ; pest-ridden, swampy. place of mosquitoes | and malaria. This belief, instilled into the publie mind during the} Spanish-American war, per-) sists to, this day in many, places:in the north, and un- fortunately little has been | done. to dispel it. | There is no reason why| Key West cannot cash in on her climate and fishing! grounds, just as Miami has, | but she can’t do it as long! as she continues to hide her! light ‘under a bushel. In: order to attract tourists iu considerable num-| bers; this: city will have to! advertise in large metropoli-! tan northern newspapers, It is true that such a campaign! would be expensive, but if the advertisements were | placed and attractive they would pay dividends beyond} our €ondest expectations. | One of the main things ; that should be stressed’ in such advertisements, in ad-! dition to our excellent cli- mate and fishing grounds, is | the fact that hay fever, as- thma, bronchitis and similar afflictions are unknown here. Indeed, not only un- known, but that the climate is conducive to their cure. There is now an abun-} dance of war-time cash in the north that is itching to} be spent, and Key West can! get its share if it goes after | it in the right way. The right way, it would seem, is to have an alert, aggressive Chamber of Com- merce—something. that we lack at the present time. The Chamber, in turn, should employ a smart, ex- perienced press agent to put Key West on the map through good news stories and snappy pictures. Right. now would ‘be a good time to start stream- lining our Chamber of Com- merce toward a more profit- able end.How about it? say that this is the “very '| the determination that for more than a quarter 0! their party”, so that it ee zead: “Now is the time for all Key Westers, brave and true, to come to the aid of their city.” Best is best, but if we may fall into a redundancy, let us| best” time for Key Westers: to step forward to try to help their city. - The best. way to help it, is to start a movement, wit! come avreality, Pe merge the city; and cow govern- ments, a proposition that The Citizen has advocate a century, Other cities and counties} have merged in Florida, and, in some cases, at a sav- ing in excess of $100,000 a year. - Let us assume that Key. West and Monroe county were consolidated, ‘what would happen? We would have one » clerk, one tax assessor, one collec- tor, one board of comm sioners and about one-third} of the number of clerks, or, as they are called in city hall, secretaries. The only departments re- tained in the city would be}? the police, fire and, scaven;), ger departments. ne Many years: ago a visitor to Key West told The Citi- zen: “Key West and Mon-!\ roe county, from a viewpoint of population, are practical- ly one. I see no reason what- ever for having two govern- ments, other than to provide more political jobs. A con- solidated government would: save the taxpayers many thousands of dollars: annual- ly.” Today, with Key West property owners facing the highest taxation in their his- tory, is an opportune time to start a movement to merge the city and county. Contracts are made to be kept, not to be broken. «Money in the bank, or in postal savings, is much bet- ter than cash in a tin can or an old sock, The puropse of business is to make money; if you have a business and it isn’t mak- ing money, let somebody else have it. BE PREPARED FOR WAR, There may be differences of opinion among the people of this country as to the ad-! visability of a single defense force, or as to the credit to} be given the various services in connection with victory} ro in Europe and Japan, but} there should be no present} hesitation in insisting that the country be prepared for| anything that might happen in the future. General: Jacob L, Devers, Commander of the Ground Forces, points out that the forces of lust and}: greed have lost two wars because the United States was given time to, gather strength. In both wars, ag- gressive attacks failed be-|' cause we had allies able to withstand the onslaught un- til we got ready. General Devers warns, however, that “we will not have that ad- vantage in any future war.” This is the opinion of the officer, but there is no cer- tainty that he is right. Neither is there certainty that he is wrong. Conse- quently, it behooves the peo- ple of this country to de-|* mand a state of prepared- ness that will take care of this country, whether the United Nations manage to prevent future warfare or not. While we do not subscribe | ; to the general phobia that Russia is an inevitable} isk enemy of this country and |‘) that war will occur, there is nothing wrong with taking} ‘ou note of the continued exis- tence of a huge Red Army and the open efforts of the | Soviet regime to inculcate} into the Russian people the idea that the Red Army is a bulwark to protect them from international enemies.
