CORAL ROCKETS By L, P, ARTMAN, JR. PARBBAADAAAAADADAAAANAAEARAADEEEBRRS UNTRUE PICTURE of I think that one of the worst) things in this world is to tell an} untruth. In the Navy an offic can be discharged for this d fault. So out and out, then, has} Key West something to offer, rigt) mow or hasn’t it! A local) tour agency has listed fifty points | of interest. Ray Navarro, sight- seeing guide lists more than, those. How can anyone have the absolute cheek and effrontery to state that Key West has “noth- | ing to offer”, I cannot see. haga | ers Write reams about Key West’s uniqueness and its interest to} tourists. They won't write about you unless you have something. | I have just received a letter from Ben Gross, radio editor of the New York Daily News, in which he states that he has returned to his desk and that he still remem- bers his Key West trip as some magic carpet voyage. If theer “ain't nothin’ here, there couldn’t be that reaction”. . e SUMMER CLEANUP j It is well and mighty good to gmatk into the local citizenry dur- ing the summer time on the mat- fer of civic pride. The city is @oing that right now. They have 4 G@eanup campaign now about a month old, with residents coop- ating very well. The beach Validation is lagging again. I am not afraid to say that. It is utterly unthink- able that Key West, which has its nearing future so inextricably mixed with a tourist future should be so narrow-minded in its lead- ers that a man can get up at this point of the game and say, “Now, fellers, let's not advertise (yawn); Jet's wait a few years (yawn).” ° e NAVY FOLDS— SLEEPING KEY WEST others were advocating the Navy here in Key colunm was the first to against that shallow think it has come to pass. I say, we bask too much’in the shallow thinking of our leaders. other tourist centers. How can anyone have the shamé to sit back and advocate no advertis- ing for Key West in the face of the refutation of this opinion from other Florida cities going ahead at this time! ( e e MAKE CLEANUP THOROUGH r There is a cleanup campaign in this city right-now. One of the most important is getting some of the many bars off Duval Street. One of the most important is cleaning out the slot machines which have lately crept into the | city. One of the most important is a higher morality among our leaders—a morality which will make civic projects things for the advancement of the city»and not just playthings for those who would gain out of them: Too many years have been wasted in our past in which every import- ant civic project which went in| had a personal planned monetary gain for so-called civie leaders. I say, this is the time to shut out the narrow thinking of that type of leadership. The election just concluded once again démonstrat- ed strongly and suddenly the public’s contempt for those who would spend money. for political ends which grant them personal favors against the wishes of the; electorate, > e e STRONGEST EDITORIAL SUGGESTION _. A local civic leader whom I have found without selfish mo- tives in civic projects, told me two days ago that this column has become the’ strongest edi- torial expression in the city to- day. Why? Because there are no strings to it! ‘It is’ only so because it brings out facts which show the true picture, of the cheap chiseling graft in political campaigns, of the puppets who move to strings, of the low moral- ity which hides itself in civic linens, of the facts that in many sibilities and undertaken ONLY for that motive, in many cases. e e MAJORITY THOUGHT. Do you think we have the MA- JORITY opinion, not just'a small group’s opinion, when we take up subjects in this column? Test this fact with our political pre- diction of two columns ago. What Key West needs is HAPPY: CON- VICTION and the COURAGE to go ahead on it. Let’s-never.again go back to a selfish leadershi ership! ‘ 7 , r DOES KEY WEST. (Continued trem Page ing committee which spent $2,- 000 to $3,000 and which showed a result at, that tite. Then we stopped. I believe that there is a great need for advertising Key West in any form. Are we' as slow as others we are?; There is a mild depres ory in Key West right now. Face the facts!| Why? YAWN, YAWN! | You don't see the leaders of other tourist centers sitting back and yawning at this period of the game or playing tiddley winks o y allay.
