TION IN PAST MONTHS At the Rotary luncheon today city manager Dave King summar- fazed four months of progress since he became city manager and six months since the new commission went into office. Mr. King said that many per- sons who doubted that he would be able to work along the lines he planned have now seen the proof of this. Especially the poli- ey of equality—what is good for the goose is good for the gander. Collections Cited In the department of Finance, the scavenger department had been collecting only $40,000 and $50,000. Now about is collected and about 000 or $52,000 spent. Occupa- tional licenses collection had been ignored, Mr. King said. “We will collect all delinquent monies” Mr. King said. A year ago in March the col- lections in ong month was $17,000 and last March was $47,000. More money necessitated a complete bookkeeping change. In Public Service the city equipment had been rusted out to an extent that pistons were sticking to cylinder walls. Loan of new equipment was made and holes in marl streets and as- phalt streets patched. At the city dump the same hole which was used to take marl from is now used for refuse disposal. Street signs have been 90 per cent re- placed. Others will be ordered. Some were found in vacant/ lots and in sheds. S. Congress from this district. Con- gressman-elect Smathers has been very active in state Jaycee work. Earl Adams, Rotary’s newly elected president, outlined a pro- posed clean-up of the city. Mr. Adams said that visitors to the city declared Key West has God- given beauty and man-made filth. He suggested beautifying the city first by cleaning up the vacant lots, a great percentage of which were owned by out-of-town in- terests which hold the land large- ly for speculation. Jaycees voted to endorse this project and work for its betterment, I Mr. Adams ‘said ‘that this Was not the time to advertise Key West because as a storekeeper “Key. West has little or no. wares to sell”. He said that it was his opinion that the city should ad- yertise after the cleanup cam- paign and the beaches are com- plete. A delegation of about ten Jaycees will leave Friday at noon for the state convention to be held this year in Fort Myers Electric Rates Cut By F.P.&L. (By Associated Prear) MIAMI, May 9.—McGregor Smith, president of the Florida Power and Light Co.. announced today that the company nas de- cided to cut its rates for elec- ticity, effective June 1. He said ®hat the decrease rates will cost the company $2,500,000 a year. Rapidity in the growth of Flor- ida, he declared, has convinced the directors of the company that the ‘volume of output will be so much greater it warranted them in reducing the rates. Decreased rates range from 13 to -20 percent, chiefly among the maller users of electricity. Tree Uprooted In Bus Accident A City Transit Co. bus and an automobile, the driver of which, police s: left the scene, were involved in an accident at Di ion street and the Cactus Ter- race camp at‘10 o’clock last night. Patrolman Frank Jolly reported the bus, operated by Charles Williams, was traveling south- automobile, just ahead of the west on Division street when the bus, suddenly stopped. To avoid striking the car, Will- iams swung the bus to the op- posite side of the street, crashing into a cocoanut tree, which was uprooted by the impact. The auto driver left the scene. Board Approves ‘ Car Parking Lot The City Planning commission has approved the request of Al bert “Mills to operate a’ parking lot on Duval street adjacent to the La Concha hotel, City Man- ager Dave King said today. Contract Awarding For, Stadium Lights Wili Be Postponed Contract for the installation of lights for, night ball games at Municipal Stadium will not be awarded tonight at the stadium committee’s meeting as scheduled, Roy Hamlin, chairman of the group, said today. Awarding of the contract will be delayed, Mr. Hamlin declared, until the contractor has obtained prices on wiring and other equip- ment. Other business will be transacted by the committee.
