What an understatement. Present- Indianapolis, Indiana THE KEY WEST CITIZEN All through the war on rock, storm-tossed ships and resting in the hot beach sands of ihe Pacific or on the cold frozen mud of the Euro- pean Theater of War, the men in khaki and blue always kept their thoughts of American homes they had left behind them alive One of the most heartwarming thoughts they carried with them were of pictures of the girls they had left behind. These girls were from all over the American continent. They were of all races and of all creeds. But their photos carried in the pockets and wallets of the fighting men overseas meant an awful lot to these men. On this page may be seen a good cross-sec- tion ofthe “girls they left behind them”. Tiey range from Texas to Pennsylvania to Washing- ton. These girls in real life spoke with the broad accent of “a” as heard in the New Eng- land States, they spoke softly with southern accents from Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Missis- sippi. They had the cheery drawl of the mid- dlewest and. the great grain states. Or they had the freshness of talk of the West Coast States. There were many things to come back to for’ the men overseas. There were business comradeship and sports with Dad, there were Moms and their cooking and care. There were the other members of the family and friends. But certainly ranking among the highest were the “pin up girls of the.services,” the own “priv- ate” sweethearts. This page is reproduced from pictures of sweethearts of the men at Boca Chica Field and Naval Air grmicn.
