Following is an article on the highway along the Florida Keys i written for the} lirer by Dave Koberts, the Enquirer’s Travel; Editor. By special permission of | the Enquirer the article is repro- duced herewith: The highway miles southwest from Miami té Key West compares well with;any, of the magnificent roads which man, fashioned during the last genera- tion. As we rolled along its smooth distances, over great causeways that span the open sea, we coms d it with other trailg we'd travelled—with the road to Mexico City, with the Ledo-Bur- ™a road, with the old Alcan, with the route which skirts lovely Gaspe peninsula in Canada and tiiat ribbon of vement stretch-} ing eastward along the Mediter- Oran, in North Afri-| beautiful; all are ex-} citing and inspiring. The othe are longer and more extensive, | Cincinnati which leads 158) through his ingenuity, has} the island of Key West, he ae thousands of human bones strewn along the sandy beaches. These were the remains, probably, of | native peoples—Caribs and Ca-/ lusas—who fought often for con- |trol of this choice hunting and fishing territory. The Spaniard— so the story goes—called the place ayo Hueso island of bones). | Englishmen,. following later, cor- rupted the nanie to Key West—a very appropriate title. The city itself is not old—it was founded in 1800 and incor-| porated in 1828. But it has an interesting and colorful history. At one time it ‘was the greatest manufacturing center in the world for clear Havana cigars, al- though at the time—between 1830 and 1870—the town was entirely isolated from contact with the} outside world except by water. | Later it became a great sponge} matket, but a scourge destroyed | |the animals in Key West waters, | |and this source of revenue was lost. There is a genuineness here that ssing in many of the great ns; a closeness to na+ »mes from personal contact with wind and sea, sand, tude and sun The first 40 miles, while they are interesting enough, tell little of the delights which lie beyond. The road carries you past small fishing villages; across narrow bridges connecting the low, man- grove-blanketed islands. But as you pass Upper Matecumbe, dist- ances between the islands begin fo grow You see | of the land, and more of the broad open sea, which lies to the right, and of the Atlantic, down south to your left. Communities are few, but the highway is smooth and wide as a city boulevard. At Channel Five you ‘hit the first long bridge. Here the road bas been laid on the old ‘truss bridge which once, ¢arried the rail line that served Key West— the line which was destroyed in the hurricane of 1935 and never restored. The bridge structure, while wide enough to carry the rails, was not wide enough in its original form to support a: two- lane motorcar route, It was sliced through.the center, from ‘érid ‘to énd, one side was extended—and Presto|—a_ broad cement” span was laid across the miles of dane- img opal sea. The longest bridge connects hey V and Bahia Honda—a distance of seven miles. Here, safe and si in hi tomobile, the motorist finds himself driving almost out of sight of any and, It is a most unusual exp nee. Tiny green islands lie acr the multicolored stretches of water. Ahead and behind is the steel and stone of the bridge—a bridge which, it mystery of a distant horizon. Each little island is an interest in itself. There’s Big Pine Key, whre forests of fair-s greens are growing. Ramrod, Cudjoe, Sugar Loaf and Saddle Bunch—one must wonder how the names were coined. This comes not only from the Cham- ber of Commerce, but from scores of visiting customers. The city is proud of the chart of “extremes” it issues.
