Mitscher, com- mander of Task Force 58, whose carriers and escorting vessels took the brunt of the Japanese air attack while covering ground operations on Okinawa for two months, says that Japanese suicide plane attacks are not “too serious” and that only one per- cent of the suicide planes launched against naval units ever hit the target. The Admiral is in Washington for con- ference with high naval officials. He ex- presses the opinion that the suicide plane threat ean be practically eliminated, al- though admitting that some redesigning of equipment aboard ship will be necessary. Admiral Mitscher points out that more than 1,600 suicide planes have been shot down over Okinawa and says that only 10 percent of the total get through the line of destroyers and small ships which provide protection for carriers, battleships, trans- ports and other large vessels. Of the 10 pereent that pass the picket line, only one- tenth ever hit a target and by “target” he includes everything, large ships and small. “Actuall admiral Mitscher, “suicide bombing is just dive-bombing, ex- ot the man goes with the bomb.” Admit- tedly, there is more accuracy because of the man inside the plane to guide it to the ship. While the Navy has lost a number of small ships no large combat ship has been sank, declares the Admiral. While the admiral did not mention the subject in his conference, the Tokyo radio is making references to the successful use we ree ret nr wee eae eee ee ee Pen Soares i DON’T FOLD' YOUR ARMS Rumor is barking the heel of rumor, as it races wildly around Key West, about government activities that are supposed to be transferred here. If only one-tenth of the rumors turn out to be true, Key West has nothing to worry about in the postwar world. One report says that 4,000 sailors are to be sent here for recuperation, and an- other that the air base at Pensacola is to be transferred here. Still another rumor is that sailors, who are wounded in the Pacific, will be sent here through the Panama Canal. And so it goes, though there has not been any official hint that any of those things are to occur. The rumor about more airmen coming here probably had its source in the story published in The Citizen about the Navy’s acquiring 54 acres to add to its 2,000-acre airfield on Boea Chica. But even if the rumors turn out to be true, they should not halt one whit the ac- tivities now going on in Key West, designed to improve our economic condition in the postwar world. We Key Westers should have learned by now that if we sit supinely and wait for the government or outside interests to whip up the progress of the community, we will find ourselves in that wobbly state of inde- cision that was characteristic of our civic life for many years while our town grad- ually lost almost one-half of its population. We must be up-and-doing, regardless of what outside assistance we may get. We should determine to be proud enough in our community life not to be dependent on any outside aid for our success. If we get the aid, it will be our good fortune, but let us not fold our arms and wait for it. In alleviating the misery of others, one’s own misery is alleviated. eee It is difficult for a woman to keep a se- cret; and there is more than one man who is a womah. OUR PRISONERS OF WAR When victory came in Europe, Ameri- can armies held 2,852,000 German prison- ers, some of whom are. being discharged and sent home under a plan to free miners, farmers, transport workers, women pris- oners and men over 50 years of age not sus- pected of war crimes. SS troops are being held for investiga- tion and some 600,000 of the prisoners will be retained as laborers. One-third of this number will be delivered to the French for labor in France and something like 150,000 prisoners will be turned over to the British forces of occupation. Colonel Robert J. Gill, directing our prisoner of war affairs in Europe, says that more than 300,000 were laboring for us prior to V-E Day and that they saved millions of dollars, millions of man-hours for combat duty. The Colonel says that reports that of rockets in our defense against suicide planes. Inasmuch as there is no reason for the Japanese to put out a report like this, unless there is something behind it, we pre- sume that the use of rockets is being de- veloped favorably in the effort to prevent suleide plane attacks upon our ships. Failure is one of the best educators. Many a successful business man is a broken down philosopher. ever judge an entire group by the imbecile imagination of only a few. Fre nterprise, to be successful, must afford millions of average Americans an omic opportunity. Mexico City is approaching the two million mark in population. When this writer lived there some 30 years ago, the population numbered a mere five hundred thousand. Judges, from the highest to the lowest, should be careful of their speech at all times and not indulge in persiflage or lan- guage reflecting on the character of any person, or what is worse, advise flouting the law. In Miami the other day a judge ad- vised a woman to throw hot water on a minister.of the Gospel; in fact a suggestion to break the law which he is sworn to up- hold. Why shouldn't he be impeached? Of course the judge, if proceedings would be initiated against him, would squeeze out of this dilemma by laughing off the ac- eusation as a joke. Even if it was intended as a flippancy, it does not become a mem- ber of the judiciary, German prisoners are receiving “soft treat- ment” are without the “slightest founda- tion.” He points out that prisoners of war are paid at the rate of 80 cents a day, but will get no cash until Germany foots the bill. The pay for officers starts at $20 a month for lieutenants and runs to $40 for field marshals. Incidentally, the salary goes on the books and will be paid, if at all, by Germany, under the provisions of the Geneva Convention. Soldiers’ and sailors’ reading is still the mail, lest you forget. One good reason for a trip to Cuba is that there is plenty of meat on the island. POLES OCCUPY TESCHEN Troops of the Soviet-sponsored Polish government have entered Teschen and Marshal Rola-Zymierski, the Polish com- mander, claims that the Polish army is al- ways “ready to defend the rights” of Po- land and her people. It will be remembered that the coal mining town of Teschen, which straddles the Polish-Czechoslovak border, was occu- pied by Polish troops after the Munich agreement of 1938. This compelled Czecho- slovakia to permit the Poles to occupy the area but Czechoslovak authorities have re- lied on the Allies to restore territory lost by their country as a result of Hitle coup. Meanwhile, the Soviet government has invited Czechoslovakian leaders and Polish leaders to confer on claims to German Si- lesia and the Teschen area. The matter should be settled, we presume, without a war between Poland and Czechoslovakia. “THE KEY WEST CITIZEN LEGALS NOTICE OF AYPLICATION FOR TAX DEED Chapter 20722—Acts of 1941 NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that Randolph E, Bel! and Ruth H.
