Hamilton Finder, who resides directly across the street from the Manegold residence, declares that when Mrs. 1 other two NEW METHOD OF CHEMICAL DESALINATION IS ANNOUN- CED BY REAR ADMIRAL’ McINTIRE A simple and effective method! of making sea water safe to drink has been perfected and this new method of chemical desalination, announced by Rear Admiral R. T- McIntire, Surgeon General of the Navy, appears to be a more prac- ticable method of producing po- table water than any yet devised other than distillation. It was developed primarily for use on rubber life rafts carried on aircraft, where the c ying of large quantities of fresh water is impracticable. The equipment consists of two chemical compounds, which are compressed to bar-of-soap size, and four plastic bags. The latter, when not in use, are rolled to con- serve storage space. Each has a capacity of slightly more than a quart. The development of a method that would enable a weakened or wounded man, adrift on a rubber raft to produce drinking water— easily and without assistance—has challenged scientists for years. Another “must,” heretofore unat- tained, is that the water shall not only be saltless bet lacking in any chemical or other substance that would. harm the drinker. Still an-| other problem had to be solved was space economy. Stowage of bulky equipment in a small rub- ber raft is obviously impractic- ; able. In the newlv devised method, 11 parts of water have been obtained |to everv part of chemical. The process has a potential of 17 to 1 but this favorable output cannot ibe expected to be achieved on a raft at the mercy of the elements, j when a certain amount of loss i screams awakened hm, and he ran; to the house to learn what had she told him the burg-} as a negro, but, at the hear- ing before Justice of the Peace Enrique Esquinaido, Jr., she de-| nied she had sad the man was a! negro, Kufeldt is at liberty under a bond of $500, and hi: se will be tried at the regular term of the| turned unavoidable. The use of all four of the pla tic bags, which may be worn by a cord around the neck, is recom- mended, but the desalination may be carried out with only two, if necessary, provided eat. contains a filter sack.
