Hawken gets the Military Medal. Hawken was driving a_ tank when an enemy shell struck the turret, wounding his commander and operator, who fell on the pinning him down and Hawken carried on, keeping his tank up with the rest of the squadron, using his turret machine gun as his sole weapon. Eventually a lull came and Hawken pulled his tank out, un- loaded the wounded men. Then, he rejoined the squadron and with the gunner remained in ac- tion the rest of the day. Lance-Corporal Dovey, of the same outfit, also received the Military Medal. On June 13 (Black Saturday) the tank he was driving was hit and four of the crew wounded. The commander was able to evacu- ate three of the wounded to a nearby tank: There, Dovey’s tank, still being engaged, was sét on fire and the fourth wounded man was trapned in the turret. Dovey jammed the throttle down to set the tank in action, climbed from the driver’s seat into the main turret, put the fire out, traversed the turret so that the wounded man could be e: tricated, got beck into the dri fer’s seat and trundled the dam- aged tank and the wounded man to a place where both could re- |ceive attention. As a result, a man’s life was saved as welligs a j tank, VISITING HERE Mario Valdez and_ soni! Hector, of Tampz, are aemtar? | a week's vacation in Key West, which was formerly their home.
